Understanding Sleep Apnea

Sleep apnea is a serious condition that often goes undiagnosed, especially among the Baby Boomer Generation. Sleep apnea is a disorder that interrupts breathing during sleep, causing it to stop and start repeatedly many times per hour.  Sleep apnea is often associated with loud snoring and can lead to significant Health issues like high blood pressure, Heart Disease, Stroke and Diabetes if left untreated. Because sleep apnea can affect people of all shapes and sizes, our Experts in this area of the site explore the overlooked dangers and what we should do if we have sleep apnea.

Common signs to watch for that indicate you may have sleep apnea include frequent snoring, waking up feeling unrefreshed or experiencing daytime fatigue. If your partner notices pauses in your breathing or irregular breathing patterns as you sleep, that is also a strong indicator of sleep apnea. Obstructive sleep apnea happens when the muscles that control your airway relax too much, narrowing your throat which reduces your oxygen levels, so your brain wakes you up to reopen your airway. CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) machines are the most common devices used for sleep apnea. This is an air blower that forces constant air through your nose and the air pressure is just enough to keep your upper airway tissues from relaxing too much while you sleep.
