Stroke Awareness: Critical Information for the Baby Boomer Generation
Stroke awareness is critical for everyone, but it holds particular significance for the baby Boomer Generation. As this group ages, understanding the risks, symptoms, and preventive measures associated with stroke can save lives and improve quality of life. A stroke occurs when blood flow to a part of the brain is interrupted or reduced, preventing brain tissue from getting the oxygen and nutrients it needs. Within minutes, brain cells begin to die. The Ischemic stroke is the most common type of stroke, accounting for about 87% of all cases. It happens when a blood clot blocks or narrows an artery leading to the brain. The Hemorrhagic stroke occurs when a blood vessel in the brain bursts, leading to bleeding in or around the brain. The Transient Ischemic Attack (TIA) is often called a mini-stroke and has a temporary period of symptoms similar to those of a stroke but doesn’t cause permanent damage and is a warning sign for future strokes.
In this section, our contributors talk about stroke awareness, stroke symptoms, stroke treatment and stroke prevention. We should all be aware of the symptoms of a stroke. If we see our elder loved ones with their face drooping, weakness in the arms, speech difficulties, loss of vision, loss of balance or sudden severe headaches, immediately call 911. The sooner a stroke is treated, the better the chances of minimizing brain damage and improving recovery outcomes.
