Sixty-three percent of Americans identify themselves as Christians, and 43 percent plan to attend church on Easter Sunday, which celebrates the resurrection of Jesus. Easter is a big donation day for U.S. churches, as it usually has the year’s highest attendance rates. It’s also a significant money-maker for candy companies. Projected Easter spending on candy is $3.3 billion, according to WalletHub, a personal finance website. Total Easter-related spending expected in 2023 is $24 billion, with $192 per person celebrating. More than half of parents will make Easter baskets for their kids and... Continue Reading

YETI is recalling about 1.9 million coolers and gear cases in the United States and 40,760 in Canada. If the magnet-lined closures fail and the magnets fall out, serious injury or death can occur if they’re ingested. When two or more high-powered magnets are swallowed, they can attract to each other, or to another metal object, and get stuck in the digestive system. This can result in perforations, twisting and/or blockage of the intestines, infection, blood poisoning, and death. YETI has received 1,399 reports of the magnet-lined closures degrading or failing, including reports of missing... Continue Reading
Since I avoid the use of harsh, toxic chemicals in cleaning, I often use vinegar in cleaning. However, Consumer Reports says it shouldn’t be used in nine cases: Clothes irons. Vinegar could damage the inside of the iron. Countertops: Vinegar is an acid, and it can etch and dull natural stone such as marble and limestone. For granite, it can break down sealers. Dishwashers: Vinegar can eat away at the rubber parts of dishwashers. Electronic screens: Vinegar can damage the anti-glare properties on screens and make touchscreens less responsive. Flooring: Diluted vinegar can dissolve the... Continue Reading
Last week, it was exciting news when the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced proposed limits on the toxic “forever” chemicals known as PFAS as a way to reduce drinking water contamination. The proposal targets six PFAS – PFOA, PFOS, GenX, PFBS, PFNA, and PFHxS. While these are the first federal proposed drinking water limits for PFAS, 10 states already have final or interim enforceable drinking water limits for PFAS. The announcement by the EPA is historic progress, said Scott Faber, senior vice president for government affairs at the Environmental Working Group, an environmental... Continue Reading
I love Ireland. I was so fortunate to travel there with my daughter Lisa in 2016. So, I decided a good way to celebrate Saint Patrick’s Day Friday is to post some of the photos from our trip. We were fortunate to meet with some of my grandmother Laura Baylee Slingsby’s relatives. Laura was born in 1877 in Ontario, Canada, and died in 1939 in Cashmere, Washington. Here are the Bailey family members that we were able to meet in Kilkishen, County Clare. It was such fun. This is Lisa at Bunratty Castle. Located by the River Ratty in County Clare, Bunratty Castle is the most authentically restored... Continue Reading
It’s important to reduce the amount of pesticides in food that you and your children are exposed to. One way to do that is to be aware of the amount of pesticides that may be on the fruits and vegetables you buy. Thirty years after a National Academies of Sciences study warning of the dangers posed to children from pesticides, 75 percent of non-organic fruits and vegetables sold in the United States still contain potentially toxic agricultural chemicals, according to the Environmental Working Group’s “2023 Shopper’s Guide to Pesticides in Produce.” This year, blueberries and green beans... Since my daughter lives in California, I’ve been fortunate to go wine tasting several times. Sonoma County is my favorite county for wine tasting. My daughter Lisa had been wine tasting in Napa County. She said it was expensive, so we tried Sonoma County instead. It was a big hit. Able to get a deal through a bed and breakfast for free or money off at wineries, we had a fun two days of wine tasting. I’ve also done wine tasting in Riverside, El Dorado, Sacramento, Santa Cruz, and Amador counties. California is famous for its wines, but which counties produce the most award-winning reds and... Best wishes to you and your loved ones on this day to celebrate relationships. I hope if your budget is tight that you have figured out inexpensive ways to celebrate. Although it’s estimated that Valentine’s Day spending for 2023 is estimated to be $192.80 per person celebrating, about a third of people plan to give an experience this year. Maybe that’s why the estimated spending is so high – tickets to concerts and sporting events continue to climb. If your single, take time to celebrate love for yourself and your friends and family. You don’t need to be in a relationship to be happy. To... Continue Reading
