Ensuring Safety with Adult Protection Services (APS)
Adult Protection Services (APS) programs across the country support Aging adults and adults with disabilities who experience, or who are at risk of, abuse, neglect, self-neglect, or financial exploitation. APS programs investigate reports of maltreatment; conduct case planning, monitoring and evaluation; and provide, or connect people to, a variety of medical, social service, economic, legal, housing, law enforcement, and other protective, emergency, or support services. Our Experts in this area of the site will explore the need for adult protection services and its increased importance as the Baby Boomer Generation reaches Retirement age. These services act as a safety net, protecting us from potential harm or neglect.
People who experience abuse have higher rates of Depression, hospitalization, and institutionalization — and they are more likely to die prematurely. They also may experience deteriorated FamilyRelationships, diminished autonomy, and being institutionalized as the direct result of maltreatment. So, we all need to make sure our neighbors are aware of APS.

When Anthony and Catherine decided to sell their home, retire from their jobs, and become nomads, they weren’t just making a lifestyle change. They were making a fundamental shift in how they spent their time, energy, and money. The decision came during a season when life threw two major curveballs: Anthony needed a heart-valve replacement, and Catherine received an early-onset Alzheimer’s diagnosis. Both were in their fifties.
The choice to travel the world while facing serious health challenges sounds romantic in theory. But the real costs of nomadic life at fifty-plus go far beyond the …

“Our brain really prioritizes vocal signals. They’re super important to the brain because human communication is a really big priority for us as a species. It’s a deep signal in our brain, right? And so, we were seeing a stronger reaction to the screams than to the music, and that sort of makes sense. There were more intricacies to that, but I can’t really remember the exact brain areas and all that. But it was cool to see that. Yeah, it is sort of mimicking, but our brain really separates them. You know, it may still get sort of a response, a same kind of fearful response, but it’s …
