Welcome to the ANEW Body Insight podcast, your guide to optimal health. Hosted by Dr. Supatra Tovar, a clinical psychologist, registered dietitian, fitness expert, and author of “Deprogram Diet Culture: Rethink Your Relationship with Food, Heal Your Mind, and Live a Diet-Free Life,” and Chantal Donnelly, a physical therapist and author of “Settled: How to Find Calm in a Stress-Inducing World.”

In this episode, we welcome Dr. David Wiss, a registered dietitian nutritionist (RDN) and founder of Nutrition In Recovery. Dr. Wiss specializes in treating eating and substance use disorders. With a PhD in Public Health and a minor in Health Psychology from UCLA, Dr. Wiss has over 20 peer-reviewed publications.

Dr. Wiss shares his journey into nutrition, starting with personal health challenges in his early 20s. His passion for helping others led him to establish Nutrition In Recovery, a group practice of RDNs focused on the complex interplay between nutrition and mental health.

Dr. Wiss discusses the intersection of nutrition and mental health, particularly eating and substance use disorders. He explains how his experiences shaped his career and inspired his mission to bridge the gap between traditional eating disorder paradigms and substance use disorder treatments. Dr. Wiss emphasizes a comprehensive and individualized treatment approach, highlighting the need for collaboration between these fields.

We explore ultra-processed food addiction and its similarities to substance use disorders. Dr. Wiss explains the role of the dopamine system and how early life adversity, trauma, and PTSD can prime individuals for addictive behaviors. He provides insights into the neurobiological mechanisms involved, including the impact of trauma on the nervous system, immune system, and brain structure and function.

Dr. Wiss also discusses his research on adverse childhood experiences (ACES) and their link to obesity and other mental health outcomes. He explains how ACES can lead to increased susceptibility to addiction-like eating behaviors and the biological pathways that underlie these connections. His research provides valuable insights into developing effective therapeutic interventions for individuals struggling with co-occurring eating and substance use disorders.
