The Story of Our Feet

As we age, taking care of our feet becomes increasingly important, especially for Baby Boomers who want to maintain their mobility and overall Health. Proper foot care can prevent common issues such as discomfort, pain, and injuries that may arise from Aging. Our Experts in this area of the site explore the importance of our feet in making us who we are today. Feet age because they are load-bearing, high-impact and far from the heart. Because they are the foundation of mobility, when our feet change, everything above them has to adapt.

The feet are our early warning system in aging. With age, the bones in the feet gradually thin. Arches may flatten, changing shoe sizes and the foot may become wider. Stress fractures become more common because the bones aren’t as shock-absorbent. The natural cushioning on the bottom of the feet, especially the heel and ball, gets thinner, so walking becomes less comfortable, hard floors feel harsher and calluses form more easily. Nerve sensitivity changes where balance becomes less stable and tingling or numbness can appear. This is why falls become more common because the brain gets less feedback from the ground.
