Catie Harris, a nurse of 25 years and a degree collector, is a prime example of how perception shapes reality. Katie has worked in neurosurgery and was also a part of Walmart’s corporate headquarters doing recruitment of nurse practitioners. Through her experience, she has been able to understand the power of perception and how it can affect people’s lives. Catie found that when she started in Nursing, it took her a couple of years to really get the hang of it. But as she gained more experience, she felt the need to keep learning and growing. She started her MBA and eventually got her nurse practitioner degree and a PhD. She found that, even after 10 years of experience, she was still starting back at the bottom rung and having to prove herself. Catie’s PhD was in the area of perception illness, and she used neurosurgery patients to study how people respond to returning to work after a subarachnoid hemorrhage. She found that, regardless of the grade of the injury, those who saw it as a new beginning were more successful than those who saw it as a doomsday event. This showed her that one’s outlook and perception of a situation can have a major impact on what happens next. The power of perception is a concept that can be seen in all areas of life. It is especially relevant in healthcare, where the decisions we make are often based on our perception of a situation. ## Reactive instead of preventive.

We can advocate for policy changes that will allow us to practice more autonomously. We can also seek out new opportunities to practice preventive care, which can help reduce the burden of chronic illness. We must remember that, despite the restrictions of the system, we still have the power to make a difference. By being proactive and taking control of our own practice, we can create a healthcare system that is more empowering and supportive of autonomy.
