Portfolio Of My 5 Recent Favorite Books on Aging
I wanted to share my most 5 recent favorite books on Aging. Anyone and everyone can access books either online or from their local libraries, so I think it behooves us to read as much as we can on subjects near and dear to our hearts.
And since we are all aging every day, this subject is apropos.
Quote of the day: “When you’re through changing, you’re through.” Martha Stewart
We are blessed to age. Yet there are ways to make it more positive, healthy, and happier. That’s been my goal in reading these books on aging.
It’s never just ONE thing, right? We all age, yet we all want to make it the best that we can. So hearing what other smart people have to say is advantageous.
Insider tip: No ONE person knows everything. I always say a person only knows what he/she knows. That’s why it’s good to hear many different perspectives about any subject matter.

History of Reading
I’ve always been a huge reader until my dental career. At that time, I had to read dental studies and new technologies to keep up to date. And while I liked the subject, it became tedious and monotonous after a while.
Now that I’m retired, I love being part of the Forever Fierce Online Bookclub where we read a huge assortment of books and then discuss them for a week on Facebook.
Feel free to join our group. It’s very flexible if you aren’t up to reading the book that month. Many of the discussion questions are catered to everyone even if they haven’t read the book.
While I usually choose to read a hardcover book, I have learned some advantages to eReaders as well as audiobooks.
Budget tips: Most of these books can be found through the library system. Or are free on the Kindle app with your Amazon Prime Book membership.
If you do buy books, then the neighborhood library kiosks are a great way to pass them on and recycle them.
The advantage of signing up for my emails is I include a boatload of misc information in them including the newest books that I’m reading. My email family also gets personal tidbits of what’s going on in my life along with other happenings, sales, information, giveaways, extra photos, interesting articles as well as a FREE eBook about accessories.
My 5 Favorite Books on Aging (for now)
One of the reasons I chose these 5 books on aging to showcase is that they all have a somewhat different focus. As well as they are written by various types of people.
I can see a couple of them being replaced in the future as my favorites as I read more, but these are all beneficial.
Since I consider the author an important factor in these books on aging, I’ll also give a short synopsis about them.
I’m even giving my opinion on how easy the books are to read. On a scale of 1 (hard to get through) to 5 (easy and enjoyable to read).
1-Being Mortal
Being Mortal was a book from our Forever Fierce online book club. At the time it was on the list (years ago), I wasn’t reading many non-fiction books. I was still celebrating that I had the time to read fluff.
But this book was very eye-opening about aging, and how a purpose-driven life can increase our happiness.
Focus of the book: Purpose
Easy to read score: This gets a 5 because the stories are fun and it’s not depressing.
About the author: Gawande is a surgeon and calls upon his experiences with his own parents in the book. He shares many interesting studies that really make you think.
2-How Not To Age
One of the daily emails I get about healthy living (called 10 Almonds–sign up here), has a book review section, and How Not To Age was one of them.
Focus of the book: Nutrition and eating.
Easy to read score: I give this a 2-3. It’s bogged down with a lot of medical mishmash (and I even like medical mishmash), which made me skim a majority of it. Even though I scored it low, it has a TON of incredible information.
Because of all of the mishmash, I would suggest getting it from the library and looking at the categories/issues that are personal to you.
For example: the author gives his recommendation on mammograms and it’s not what you think.
About the author: Greger is the founder of Nutritionfacts.org and while he’s a Western Medicine doctor, he has learned the importance of nutrition in living well.
Insider tip: One of the powder supplements we started taking is Amla Powder because of what I learned in this book.
3-Living the Good Long Life
Living the Good Long Life is a book that popped up when I googled books on aging. It was soon after Martha’s stint on the cover of Sports Illustrated, so I was curious about it.
While it’s really written by health specialists, it has her thoughts and comments about each “golden rule”. There are 10 golden rules and my favorite was the healthy brain. It was information that you don’t read everywhere.
Focus of the book: Everything
Easy to read score: I give this a 3-4 because there was a lot of repetitive information that seemed regurgitated from medical books.
About the author: We all know Martha Stewart. I was super impressed that she posed for the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit issue even though we all know there was photoshopping involved. But it takes guts and I think she has been a great businesswoman.
Heck, she may have “cheated” and got caught but she took her punishment and we know a lot of other people who have done worse things and never been incarcerated. Don’t get me started on that soapbox, haha.
4-Younger Next Year *for Women
Our Tai Chi instructor recommended the book Younger Next Year which I was going to include in my list of books on aging. But then I saw there was this version for women, and I picked it up too.
The *for women version has a couple of extra chapters catered to women that are not in the Younger Next Year book.
I think either version is a good read.
Focus of this book: Exercise (and not just easy, everyday fitness) although other healthy aging factors are included.
Easy to read score: I give this a 4-5. You volley back and forth between the two authors, and it’s interesting and enjoyable.
About the author: The book is put together by two authors: Crowley is a lawyer and Lodge is a medical doctor. They team up together to showcase how profound behavioral change can have an impact on our health and aging.
5-Breaking the Age Code
I heard about Breaking the Age Code in my 10 Almonds email. It was only available as an audiobook from my library, so Rob and I listened to it for about 2 weeks while doing our nightly stretches. (I should say that I listened to it while Rob slept through it. It amazes me that he can Sleep while we are doing our neck stretching for 20 minutes on a device similar to this).
Insider tip: Did you know you can speed up your audiobooks so they read faster? Most of the time anywhere between 1.15-1.3 is still easy to listen to and doesn’t sound weird.
This topic was truly incredible. I think EVERYONE should read/listen to this book and act accordingly. It really goes to show that our brains are more powerful than we realize.
Focus of the book: Beliefs & Mind-Body Connection
Easy to read score: I would have given this a 5, but it did get a bit repetitive about 3/4 of the way through.
In the end, she goes through steps to help the cause, and I wish there had been more of an emphasis on that.
About the author: Levvy is a Yale professor and expert on the psychology of aging. After reading this book, I would love to take her classes.
I hope I thank you enough because your support allows me to continue this journey which I LOVE!!!
