Reevaluating a Career in Medicine

## Pursue passions to prevent burnout.

Burnout is a common issue among physicians, and it can have serious consequences for both their personal and professional lives. It is important to find ways to prevent burnout before it sets in. One way to do this is to pursue your passions.

Dr. Corinna Muller is an example of how pursuing passions can help prevent burnout. Dr. Muller is an OBGYN and maternal fetal medicine board certified physician from Anchorage, Alaska. She has experienced burnout throughout her career, but has found a great way to deal with it: music. Dr. Muller has a music degree and has been playing the flute since she was eleven. Music has taught her discipline, practice, and perseverance, helping her to cope with the stressors of medicine.

Having an outlet outside of medicine can be a great way to prevent burnout. Whether it is music, art, cooking, or anything else, having something that you can turn to can help to reduce the stress of your job. It can also provide a sense of satisfaction and accomplishment, which can help to prevent burnout.

It is also important to remember that burnout can happen to anyone. Dr. Muller was reminded of this when she interviewed other physicians about how they cope with burnout. It can be easy to feel like you are the only one going through burnout, but it is important to remember that you are not alone.

## Take care of yourself first.

Dr. Muller is a physician who has experienced burnout. She was used to practicing her flute for six hours a day before medical school, but when she got to medical school she had to adjust her study habits. After bombing the first round of tests, she was identified as someone at risk of failing out of medical school. This created a lot of Anxiety and worry for her every time she took a test. She felt like cutting down her work hours was the answer, so she went from full-time to part-time.

Then one day, Dr. Muller was going to work out in the morning and she missed a stair and broke her foot badly. Despite her injury, her first thought was to call her boss and let him know about her patients. This was the moment when she realized something was wrong. She was more concerned about her patients than her own injury. This was the bottom of the barrel burnout for her.

The injury gave her an opportunity to take a physical and mental pause from work. She and her husband decided to move back home and she started her own practice. Despite being scared of taking out a loan, she surrounded herself with people who were smarter than her in business aspects of medicine.

Now, five years later, Dr. Muller’s practice is going strong. She has been able to do things she always wanted to do, like allowing her medical assistants to bring their babies to work. She also allows her employees to bring their dogs to work. This has created a home-like atmosphere in her practice.

Dr. Muller’s story is a reminder that taking care of yourself first is important. It is easy to get caught up in the culture of medical school and residency and forget to take care of yourself. It is important to remember that burnout can happen to anyone, and that you are not alone. Pursuing passions and creating a home-like atmosphere in the workplace can help to prevent burnout. Taking care of yourself first is essential for a successful and fulfilling career.

## Champion for yourself and ask.

Dr. Muller’s story is a testament to the importance of championing for yourself and asking for what you need. After her unexpected fall, she was forced to take a step back and take care of herself. She realized that she needed to make her work environment something that worked for her in order to give the best care to her patients. It was a wake-up call that she needed to follow her dreams and take care of herself first.
