Nerve pain — often called neuropathic pain — happens when the nerves themselves are injured, irritated, or sending distorted signals. Unlike muscle or joint pain, which comes from damaged tissues, nerve pain comes from the wiring of the body misfiring. It can feel burning, electric, stabbing, or like pins and needles. It can also cause numbness, hypersensitivity, or pain from things that shouldn’t hurt (like bedsheets touching your feet). Our Experts in this area of the site explore the impact of nerve pain on the Baby Boomer Generation.
Nerve pain is caused by damaged or malfunctioning nerve fibers sending incorrect signals to the brain. Common causes include Diabetes, shingles, injuries, autoimmune diseases like lupus or rheumatoid Arthritis, infections, and chemotherapy or radiation in certain Cancer treatments. Also, alcohol use, vitamin deficiencies like B1, B6, B12, copper or vitamin E, and tumors both benign or malignant pressing on nerves. Nerve pain is a signal problem where the wires are damaged, so the messages are distorted.
