Embracing the Rise of the Maturepreneur: the Perfect Storm of Opportunity

The face of entrepreneurship is changing, with maturepreneurs—the population aged 55 and above—playing a more significant role in reshaping our Economy. During my recent podcast episode 165 I had an enlightening conversation with Jannette Anderson, a business development expert with over 40 years of strategic planning and marketing experience. Her passion for helping entrepreneurs make a meaningful difference and achieve a magnificent living was not only inspiring but also a crucial reminder of the revolution happening among older generations.

According to Jannette, the concept of the maturepreneur is not simply about continuing to work but rather finding meaning and significance in contributing to society during the later stages of one’s career. During the episode, Jannette eloquently described a “perfect storm of opportunity” created by the convergence of global trends and epidemics affecting the world today. Among these are two critical issues: the loneliness epidemic and the poverty epidemic.

Globally, the loneliness epidemic has been recognized as a serious issue, severely impacting societal well-being. The sense of isolation has become more pronounced, particularly in the older population, with the World Health Organization equating loneliness to the detrimental health effects of smoking 15 cigarettes a day. Concurrently, a significant portion of older adults, estimated at about 65% worldwide, cannot afford to retire. This forces many into entrepreneurship as they seek new avenues for generating income and regaining a sense of purpose and community.

Jannette, like many maturepreneurs, is someone with a wealth of experience in Coaching and business development, having spent decades helping entrepreneurs leverage their passions into successful careers. Her story about the discrimination she experienced due to her age on a business cruise opened my eyes to the pervasive issue of ageism in our society, which often sidelines older individuals from both professional and social opportunities.

Despite the pervasive notion that those over 50 are winding down, Jannette insists on living with purpose, with her personal mission being to help people understand they matter. She emphasizes the importance of having meaning and significance in life, especially for mature individuals. It’s a time to use accumulated experience and Wisdom, not only avoiding the personal health issues related to loneliness and lack of purpose but also to address the broader economic challenges and meet societal needs.

The conversation with Jannette was as enlightening as it was inspiring. Her optimism and insights on the importance of continuing to seek purpose and make a difference at any age truly resonate for all seeking meaning in life. As I mentioned in the podcast, more discussions on the impact of the maturepreneur in our economy today could be an enlightening dialogue for a future episode.

Let’s use Jannette’s story as a call to action. We’ve got decades of life to live to the fullest. Motivation lies in finding our ‘why’— as Jannette defines it “the intersection of healing from the past and planning for the future”. Jannette’s expertise shines in helping individuals unearth their why, emphasizing the power of community and the impact of having a purpose-driven life.

For those interested in unlocking their potential and transforming their experience, Jannette offers online coaching programs and workshops focusing on helping individuals discover and act on their purpose. Connect with her to explore how you can transition from undervalued to truly living without denial, confirming that life after 50 is just the beginning. You can find all her offerings in the show notes and make the most of this enlightening conversation.

As a passionate endorser of “healthy ageing” and taking responsibility for our lives, making them matter at all ages  I couldn’t help but feel inspired by Jannette’s passion and dedication. Remember, as she so aptly puts it, we are #NotDoneByALongShot!
