What can you do as a family that brings everyone together, regardless of age, and creates a strong sense of unity, especially when the weather outside is less than inviting? These activities are about passing the time and strengthening the family bond. Our collaborative blog offers six fun winter hobbies for the whole family.

Book Club

Encouraging reading and establishing a family book club can be a significant step. The choice of books will vary based on the family members’ ages, often leaning toward adult literature. However, if you’re keen on enhancing your kids’ reading habits, a family book club can be a fun way to discuss or even act out the book, fostering a new shared interest while promoting reading.

Let your imagination run wild with your family book club. Act out the story, create visual interpretations, or even write new adventures for the characters. The possibilities are endless, and the fun is guaranteed. A family book club is not just about reading but about sparking creativity and imagination in everyone.

Gaming/Board Games

Games are a fantastic way to kill time or develop a new family hobby or tradition this winter. They can be played in plenty of ways, as we all know. All you need to do is find the right type of game for you and your family members.

The preference for all might be to get online and play multiplayer games on your chosen device, be it PC gaming, Xbox, or PlayStation. You can also return it to the good old Sega Mega Drive or Atari for retro gaming. Consider games like Minecraft for creative building, Mario Kart for friendly competition, and Just Dance for some physical activity.

There’s much fun to be had by spending a Saturday or Sunday evening competing against each other and immersing yourself in gaming together as a family.

Alternatively, you can choose to play board games. Maybe you’re a fan of Monopoly, and you have a few different versions of the game to keep things fun and exciting (or fraught with tension, depending on who the serious player in the family is!). Or are you a Jenga family? Charades? Trivial Pursuit? Whatever your game of choice, etch some time into your schedule this winter, or make it a regular thing for you to do as a family. Why not list board games you want to try or have in the house and work your way through them?

Other games you can play together as a family include card games like solitaire, which you can play using a deck of cards or online if you’re more of a digital family. You can make up your games to play, or even watch TV game shows and put your knowledge against each other to see who the best is (there are many board games of popular TV game shows you can buy to play at home if you prefer).

Gardening

Not all gardening needs to take place outside, and let’s be honest; there’s not much you can do in your garden over the winter. However, you can get your kids interested in and excited about gardening in the winter by starting small indoors with indoor plants or growing herbs. You can also get a little indoor greenhouse that you can use to help you get started and practice your skills together as a family.

If you do want to get outside and in the garden in the winter, there are some things you can do to help you prepare for the summer. You can tidy the garden, plant bare root trees, harvest root vegetables if you’re already growing them, or learn how to use tools.

Cooking

If cooking with kids sends a shiver up your spine, why not use this time to help teach the whole family some kitchen skills? You need to start small and at a level with food and utensils suitable for your kids’ age, especially if they’re young, but cooking together can be a great hobby to dive into during the winter.

Find some recipes you enjoy and learn how to make them together. You can try making no-bake sweet treats like chocolate truffles or cold meals that don’t need to be cooked, like salads or sandwiches. These simple recipes can be made with minimal adult supervision, allowing the kids to take the lead in the kitchen.

Find some cooking channels on YouTube or blogs that feature recipes you can cook as a family. Start small with super easy meals and treats to teach skills. Some brands, like OXO, make kid-friendly utensils, so you can be sure you only use those suitable for young children. Once they develop their skills, you can upgrade them to use preferable kitchen tools.

Make Social Media Videos

Remember that you can create videos without posting them if you don’t want your children to be on social media. However, following trends and copying viral videos and content on social media can be fun, even if you often share it.

This can allow you to engage with your kids, have fun, and spend quality time together. But remember to discuss the potential risks of sharing content on social media, such as privacy concerns and cyberbullying, to ensure everyone’s safety and well-being.

Social media plays a big part in most people’s lives, and if this applies to your family, why not use it for a good purpose and make social media videos as a hobby? There are so many benefits to doing this. You can help to learn new skills such as dancing and public speaking (video plays an integral part in the recruitment of having your children comfortable speaking to a camera. Recording videos can be massively hopeful here); you can boost their confidence when they nail a dance routine or get trends right, this can be a massive boost to their self-esteem even if no one sees it. It can help you teach them about responsible and appropriate social media usage for when they are ready to share content publicly. Plus, social media careers are set to be around for a while, giving them valuable skills for future Employment, even if that’s a long way off.

You never know; this fun family hobby can catapult you to social media stardom and be a lucrative income source for the whole family if you share your videos publicly.

Writing

Writing is a great hobby to take up as a family, and it can be done in many ways. Essentially, you want your family writing times to be a fun, creative endeavor, and as usual, the last thing you want is for it to feel like school all over again.

It is not about learning anything; it is more about expressing yourself. So you can use this time to have your kids write a journal for themselves only; you can write a story together as a family; voice or text apps can be valuable here if you do not want to write physically or your kids aren’t old enough to write long stories, you can have them create comic books, write stories about their favorite celebs, idols or pets even, they can write up fun reports on their favorite sports matches, movie scripts or fiction stories it’s entirely up to you or them what you write. Still, it can be a fun activity to start over the winter. Plus, they can write by hand with pen and paper or digitally and store it for the future in Google Docs or a note app on their phone.

Conclusion: Fun Winter Hobbies for The Whole Family

You can do countless hobbies and activities together as a family over the winter. Know that these are just a few you can dip in and out of or make a regular occurrence in your house for those winter days when staying home and snuggling up is the preferred option.

Elinor Stutz International Best-Selling Author

Elinor Stutz broke through barriers long before doing so was popular. Against all the odds, she defied the theme “women can’t sell” to become the top producer at every company she ever worked for, ignoring attempts to get her to quit.

Eleven years later, I lay motionless on a stretcher with an irreparably broken neck. Two visions appearing before me, and a brilliant gold light encasing my entire body, gave me a reason to believe I would recover. I wholeheartedly knew I was about to empower audiences far and wide. At the moment, I negotiated a full recovery with the promise to be of service. The surgeon and hospital staff anointed me with the title “The Walking Miracle.”

As the CEO of Smooth Sale, Stutz adapted the motto, “Believe, Become, Empower.” Believe in yourself; Become the person you envision; Empower your audience to do the same. Stutz is on the Social Media Committee for Inclusion Allies Coalition devoted to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.
