The Copenhagen City Heart Study out of Denmark recently released their 25 year study finding that recreational tennis players life expectancy is 9.7 years longer than those who are inactive. Playing tennis has many Health benefits including increasing aerobic capacities, improving cardiovascular health by lowering resting heart rates and blood pressure, agility, muscle strength, and hand-eye coordination. Tennis is a way to stay active, social, and mentally sharp. Tennis for Baby Boomers is not just a game; it’s a health-boosting, community-building, fun-filled activity.
Tennis in the 1960s and 1970s experienced a boom in popularity, and much of that can be attributed to the Baby Boomer Generation. As television became more widespread, so did the global visibility of tennis tournaments like Wimbledon and the U.S. Open. Boomer tennis heroes include Billie Jean King who fought for gender equality in sports, particularly in tennis, inspiring Baby Boomers to think about equality in all aspects of life; and Arthur Ashe became a symbol of grace, dignity, and the fight for racial equality in tennis. His achievements and advocacy work made him an icon not only for African Americans but for all Baby Boomers who sought a more inclusive world in sports and beyond.
As our Experts explore in this section of the site, the Baby Boomer generation has left an indelible mark on the world of tennis. From the sport’s rise in popularity during their youth to their continued participation and support, Boomers have shaped the game in countless ways. They’ve enjoyed the physical and Mental Health benefits that tennis offers, formed lasting friendships within tennis communities, and inspired future generations to pick up a racket. For Boomers, this sport offers a way to stay fit and active throughout their lives.
