Olivia L. Connections Columnist

Being a Baby Boomer does not mean I must feel old, because I don’t. These last couple of decades have been some of the most gratifying times in my life. My philosophy is I am not getting older; I am getting better. And through my column I want to share with you the real pleasures of Aging and how at our age there is just so much more we can do than when we were younger. If you agree with me or disagree with me on what I write, let me know, so you too can become part of my column.

Have you ever noticed how exhausting it is to carry a grudge? That tight feeling in your chest when you think of someone you can’t stand. That’s not just a passing emotion — it’s hatred leaving its mark. Hatred isn’t just about disliking someone intensely. It’s a corrosive emotion that seeps into your thoughts, your Relationships, and even your Health. And whether you realize it or not, the price you pay for hating others is steep — far steeper than the satisfaction you might feel when indulging in it. Hatred doesn’t just affect the target of your anger; it poisons the person w…

There’s something magical about grandparents. The moment you walk into their home, you feel it — the warmth, comfort, and the unconditional love. You smell the aroma of food that only they can cook just right, you hear stories you’ve probably heard a dozen times but still love, and you see that familiar twinkle in their eyes. If you are lucky enough to still have your grandparents around, it reflects what time, love, and life experience look like in human form. The “silver” represents the Wisdom, the years, the lessons learned, and the grace that comes with age. The “gold” signif…

Nothing hits quite like the warmth in your chest when you make someone smile. It’s that moment when a small gesture, kind word, or unexpected act of kindness flips someone’s day around, and somehow, it flips yours too. You walk away lighter, happier, more connected to the world around you. But have you ever asked yourself why that feels so good? Why do you feel more fulfilled making someone else happy than chasing your own happiness directly? The answer is layered—woven from threads of psychology, biology, and even spirituality. We’re not just people looking for joy; we’re built t…

Middle age crept up on me like a quiet storm. One day I was full of ambition, running on youthful energy, and the next—I was waking up with aches in places I didn't know existed, pondering life’s deeper meaning over a cup of lukewarm coffee. It wasn’t marked by any grand event. No parade, no revelation. Just a growing realization that something inside had shifted. The way I saw the world, how I reacted to Stress, the people I chose to keep close—all of it began to change. And so, the question hits: Did reaching middle age actually give me wisdom? Not just knowledge or experience, but t…

Let’s start by acknowledging something we often don’t say out loud: parenting doesn’t stop just because your child turns 18—or 25, or even 40. The emotional investment you've made over decades doesn’t magically disappear. You've sacrificed, worried, nurtured, and given your best. Naturally, you've built expectations—some spoken, some unspoken—about how your child would grow up, who they'd become, and the kind of relationship you'd have. And when reality doesn’t match the mental image you held on to, it hurts. Deeply. Parental expectations often feel like a sacred bond. You m…

Have you ever been in a conversation where someone asked a question that instantly shifted your perspective? It probably didn’t feel forced or overly intellectual, it just clicked. That’s the magic of asking the right question at the right time. In a world obsessed with giving answers, we often overlook our real skill: asking the right questions. Questions are more than conversation starters. They are thought activators, empathy builders, and decision drivers. From business meetings to dinner table discussions, the questions we ask (or fail to ask) determine the quality of our thinking, th…

Children thrive on connection. Public schools offer a dynamic and consistent environment where kids can meet others from different walks of life, helping them develop social networks and build lasting friendships. Unlike homeschooling or isolated private Education models, public school students are immersed in an ecosystem full of different personalities and backgrounds. This constant interaction teaches conflict resolution, teamwork, and empathy—skills that are essential for both academic success and real-life social scenarios. Friendship isn’t just a “nice to have” in childhood—…

There was a time when writing a letter wasn’t just a form of communication, it was a ritual, a moment of reflection, and a deeply personal act. For baby boomers, the letter was a lifeline. Whether it was scribbled on lined paper, elegantly inked on fine stationery, or typed with care on a typewriter, each letter carried a part of the sender’s soul. Unlike the fast-paced texting and emailing of today, letter writing required patience. You’d sit down with your thoughts, maybe with a cup of coffee or tea by your side and pour your heart out. The deliberate act of writing made you think a…

If you've ever found yourself wondering why your adult children don’t come around as much, you’re not alone—and it might not be as personal as it feels. One of the most overlooked but powerful forces at play is the generation gap. Us Baby Boomers were raised in a post-war, economically rising society, tending to value hard work, discipline, Family loyalty, and structure. Many of us grew up in households where respect for elders wasn’t optional—it was a given. Fast forward a few decades, and we’re dealing with Millennials and Gen Z, who were raised in a very different world—one th…

That phrase— “from payphones to iPhones”—is a poetic shorthand for one of the most dramatic technological and cultural shifts of the last half-century. It captures the journey from analog isolation to digital immersion, especially poignant for Baby Boomers who’ve lived through every phase of that evolution. Baby Boomers were born into landlines and payphones from the 1950s through the 1970s. Communication was intentional, public and often delayed. Privacy was limited and calls were tied to physical locations. In the 1980s and 1990s pagers and early cell phones were introduced and mob…
