Medication really helped in the early times, but three years later when I wanted to titrate off, I found my negative, self-critical thoughts completely overwhelming. I felt broken. The bummer was that I was a therapist. I knew what Therapy entailed, and I knew it wouldn’t help. In desperation (really, I wanted to be a better mom to my son), I went to the literature to find out what was going on with me, and what I learned blew my mind. It is a total paradigm shift for the field. There is great excitement around this topic. When I shared it with Psychology Today, they asked me start blogging. New Harbinger Publications reached out to turn it into a book (release date: June 1). I’m excited to get the word out to people, because this shift has greatly improved my Mental Health, and I’ve watched as it has done the same for those around me. You know the idea that a fish can’t tell you about water? The water for our field is that we are our thoughts and beliefs. That our thoughts and beliefs reveal who we are. Neuroscience proves that we are not. Many of our thoughts are automatic, and they come from a primitive thought network (the default mode network) that talks at us all day. It focuses on survival — how to keep you in the clan so that you don’t get kicked out (being kicked out means death). This is why it compares you to everyone around you and points out all the ways you don’t measure up or aren’t as ‘good’ as others. Thoughts like, “I am worthless,” “I am a failure,” “I am not good enough,” and more all come from this network. When we listen to these thoughts, believe that they are us talking, and buy into them, it can lead to depression, Anxiety, low self-worth, and more. The beauty is that identifying and separating from these thoughts can lead to greater happiness, self esteem, well-being, and more.Thank you for taking the time to read my story.
