Safety and compliance are paramount for your business premises. You want your business to operate safely for your employees and to ensure you adhere to the rules and regulations that lawmakers have established.

After all, there’s nothing that causes more headaches than employee injuries and problems within the workplace that could have been avoided.

Whether you’re looking to improve the safety of your operations or creating a new business and don’t know where to start, here’s everything you need to know to ensure safety and compliance on your business premises at all times.

Appoint the right person for health and safety

First and foremost, appoint the right person for all health and safety management requirements. This is important because you want someone ideally trained and qualified to handle all business health and safety aspects.

If you don’t appoint the right person or neglect to staff this position, your business can be in hot water. Therefore, you should consider what you need within the business to appropriately staff the organization with the right number of health and safety managers or assistants.

Ultimately, you want someone who sits at the top and can manage the business’s everyday operations from a health and safety perspective. They should work with other departments and staff members to ensure everything is operating properly and mitigating as much risk as possible.

Identify any hazards and carry out risk assessments

Hazards are everywhere, and they are often forgotten. These hazards are often evident and hidden, whether walking around the business premises, the home, or out on a walk in your local area.

Therefore, it’s important to identify any hazards in the workplace and carry out the necessary risk assessments to understand the problems and how you could help.

Navigating your way around the business premises regularly is helpful because new hazards can occasionally pop up. You might find that your hazards as a business are a lot more complex than other business premises, perhaps because of the nature of the work you conduct.

For example, any business operating heavy machinery is likely to have more hazards and, therefore, require many risk assessments to keep its employees safe.

Train your employees in specialist areas where required

Training your employees is a great way to ensure every staff member is responsible and accountable for their own decisions and mistakes.

With training, you give your employees the opportunity to learn more about health and safety and the risks associated with their job. Training your employees in specialist areas might be handy when there are risks within the job that require a professional’s attention and knowledge.

For example, you might want to get a whmis certification if your workplace uses waste and hazardous materials. It might be helpful if your business navigates the online world, as Cybersecurity training is the best form of training.

Every business is different, but despite that, staff training can be convenient when you’re trying to protect your business from harm both offline and online. Again, there are plenty of risks to your business premises, and your employees are responsible for keeping them safe at all times.

Provide a health and safety policy

Health and safety policies are helpful for giving everyone a clear rundown of your business’s health and safety needs. They can also point out the risks within the business premises and how these should be handled accordingly.

Having a health and safety policy in place protects your back as an employer and will avoid any possible attempts or threats made against the business by a disgruntled employee.

These policies should be readily available. They should be posted around the building so that everyone can see them clearly, and they should be sent to each and every staff member so that no one can say they didn’t receive them or see them.

Speak to your employees about changes needed

It’s useful to engage with your employees and get their thoughts on what the business could be doing better to ensure safety and compliance throughout the business.

Of course, a business can’t have eyes and ears everywhere, which is why it’s important to check in with your employees about what they’ve noticed. One-to-one meetings or company meetings where everyone contributes something that might be useful for health and safety can be helpful for gathering this information.

It might not always prove fruitful, but it is definitely something that should be done on occasion so that you get it straight from the mouths of those who are likely to notice the problems or risks before they get worse.

Encourage your employees to keep workstations clean

Part of your employees’ responsibility is to keep their workstations clean. Whatever office dynamic you have going on and the layout in particular, your employees should always take good care of their working spaces to ensure that it’s safe for them and their colleagues.

Keeping workstations clean should be easy enough, but some employees struggle to do so in the workplace. While they might not treat their homes in the same way, the workplace can often be seen as an opportunity to slack when looking after their surroundings.

Consider implementing a workstation policy so that everyone understands how to maintain their workstations and what is acceptable when keeping them clean and tidy.

Not keeping workstations clean can lead to many hidden dangers, especially in the surrounding areas. From empty boxes and equipment to plates and cutlery, there are potential tripping hazards and issues with pests that could occur.

Provide the best quality equipment and tools

To help maintain compliance, you should examine the qualifications and certifications needed for operating equipment and tools in general.

The more complex the equipment or tool, the more you should be concerned about having the proper certifications to remain compliant.

In order to maintain the same level of safety, you should look to get the very best quality when it comes to making business purchases of tools and equipment. The better quality they are, the less likely they will be to break down, get damaged, or cause potential harm to your employees.

Your employees will be happier, too, if they use premium equipment or tools for the makes and models.

Never relax as there will always be something

When it comes to ensuring safety and compliance in your business, you should always be on alert. The truth is that there will always be something that needs the attention of those who deal with health and safety concerns. Ensure you’ve always got the right people in place and the right policies and procedures to keep everyone safe.

Ensuring compliance and safety in the workplace keeps your business safe from harm.
