Destination Portugal: Évora &Raquo; Evora5

Évora is a charming and historic city in central Portugal with relics from Roman and Moorish influence before and during the Medieval period, including protective walls, a temple, several cathedrals, and remains of a royal palace. Group following the guide Our tour of the UNESCO Heritage Site began with a walk through a quiet park bordering an ancient wall as a local guide provided information about the city’s rich history when it was one of Portugal’s cultural and educational centers.  Church of St. Francis And then on toward the Old Town center, stopping... Continue Reading

Destination Portugal: Coimbra &Raquo; Coimbra3

After spending a couple of days in Porto, we traveled south to historic Coimbra, the fourth-largest city in Portugal.  Belltower at the university Our half-day visit focused on the University of Coimbra and the shopping area near the Mondego River. There’s a limit on what you can see before moving to the next destination on the itinerary. The Romans found the city, naming it Aeminium in the first century. In the succeeding centuries, the Suebi, Alans, Visigoths, and Muslims ruled for periods of time before King Ferdinand I of Leon reconquered the territory in 1064.  You might... Continue Reading

Destination Portugal: Porto &Raquo; Porto Night

I suppose one adventure of travel is making connecting flights at various airports. The ideal is to board a plane at your home airport and fly nonstop to your destination. That’s highly unlikely if you’re flying overseas in economy class. I like to think it adds to the adventure of seeing fresh places, even if it is an airport. For my wife and I on our journey to Portugal, we flew out of Blue Grass Airport in Lexington, Ky., to O’Hare International in Chicago, then a long flight to Zurich Airport in Switzerland (we can now say we’ve been to Switzerland), and then on to... Continue Reading

Safe Places &Raquo; Tomb Of The Unknown Revolutionary War Soldier 27527 2

My wife and I drove into Philadelphia so I could get fitted for a custom brace for my arthritic ankle. I don’t know if it’ll do any good; but it’s worth a try. While we were in the city, we decided to make a day of it.      We walked up to Washington Square, a six-acre park in Center City that features a statue of George Washington, as well as the tomb of an unknown Revolutionary war soldier. To me, the Revolutionary war seems abstract and far away. But this park is set on the site of a former cemetery. And when you stand in the park, gazing at the statue of Washington... Continue Reading

Destination Portugal: The Beginning &Raquo; Portugal Flag

It had been nearly three long years since my wife Mary and I traveled to Greece. In the next two years, we had planned trips to Bulgaria, Romania, and Serbia canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic.  Life, as most travelers knew it, had come to a standstill. We were able to take several day trips to nearby state parks to take in the fall foliage or visit the Louisville, Cincinnati, and Columbus zoos. An overnight trip was to Gatlinburg, Tenn., for some Smoky Mountain scenery. Our big journey was a long and memorable weekend at Mackinac Island, Mich., to celebrate our 50th wedding anniversary.  Portugal... Continue Reading

Back To The Keyboard &Raquo; Feather Pen

It’s been a while since I’ve written anything here; on Feb. 11 to be exact when I posted about a few love songs for Valentine’s Day. For those who are concerned or curious, I have been writing. Just not here.  I’m a contributor on Medium, where I’ve had about five posts in recent weeks. I call them “Random thoughts” if you’d like to read them. I plan to eventually have them here. And I’ve written book reviews on Goodreads, Amazon, and other places.  Oh, almost forgot. I’m also working on the sixth book in the “John Ross Boomer... Continue Reading

I woke up this morning and it was raining. The temperature was in the high 30s. But by 9:30 a.m. the temperature had dropped into the 20s and the rain had turned to snow.       Three days ago it was 70 degrees in Pennsylvania! What’s going on? Pennsylvania today      What’s going on is the change of seasons. As my wife says: Think of March as winter, not spring. Then you’ll be pleasantly surprised when it’s nice out, and not disappointed when it snows.      Then she reminded me, “Your friend Bill is on Sanibel Island this week.”  ... Continue Reading

As The World Struggles It’s Way Into The New Normal, Here Are Linda Ballou’s Travel Tips For 2022 &Raquo; Linda Ballou Rmp 225X300 1

By Linda Ballou, NABBW’s Adventure Travel Associate Linda Ballou The only thing certain about travel in 2022 is that it is uncertain. People are chomping at the bit to travel again but need to remain flexible. Flight schedules are still in a state of flux, car rentals are at historical highs, and Covid-19 guidelines in various countries are changing by the hour. Travel expert, Peter Greenberg, suggests that you contact your travel agent, or better yet, the concierge at a hotel in the area you are planning to visit, to get up-to-date information about Covid-19 requirements. Even the World Health... Continue Reading

Linda Ballou Shares Why Winter Is A Perfect Time To Enjoy A “Wild Time” On The Central Coast Of California &Raquo; White Pelicans Morro Estuary 300X225 1

By Linda Ballou, NABBW’s Adventure Travel Associate Winter on the Central Coasts means fewer tourists and plentiful wildlife. Birds and marine mammals gather there in chaotic profusion from December to February. White Pelicans Morro Estuary Every year, hundreds of birders flock to the sleepy fishing town of Morro Bay on California’s Central Coast to take part in the Audubon Birding Fest. The Pacific’s saltwater mixed with the freshwater of streams flowing in the largest estuary on the west coast resulting in a nutrient-rich brew for thousands of birds. The charm of the rust-colored, reed-choked... Continue Reading
