  1. Episode #361: The Human Side of the 1972 Andes Flight Disaster with John Guiver Cheryl Ilov 51:42

John Guiver is an author who turned to writing after a career in the world of Artificial Intelligence and hi-tech software who has spent many years researching the 1972 Andes flight disaster, first as a hobby and then as a full-time passion.

His research eventually led to the publication of his book titled “To Play the Game,” which was published in December 2022, the 50th anniversary of the return of 16 survivors after being lost in the mountains for 72 days. John also appeared as a guest expert on the May 2023 ABC 20/20 documentary called “Prisoners of the Snow.”

John shares the details of the tragedy with a heart of compassion and empathy for the victims, the survivors, the families, and the community. His description of the event is not only based on his extensive research, but also from his personal experience of doing the trek to the crash site twice, and meeting several of the survivors and their families 50 years after the tragedy.

He also explains how his experience researching and writing the book, along with the friendships that came from the experience gave him an even deeper connection for all of the individuals involved. Of the many insights and life lessons John gleaned from this event, the most powerful is simply for all of us to open our eyes to the human side of every tragedy.
