Staying strong and balanced at 61
No matter your age, the fear of growing older can creep in. But my approach to life leaves little room for such worries, and I hope it can help others cope as well.
My only real "age crisis" hit at 25, and it was brief. Turning a quarter-century felt overwhelming, like standing on the edge of a daunting cliff.
Fast forward to 61, and I’m not only grateful but excited to still be here, especially after losing several friends too soon. I’m in relatively good shape—mentally, physically, and emotionally.
What keeps me excited is focus. Even when I catch myself fretting over loose skin, a new ache, or the rollercoaster of peri-Menopause to post-menopause (where I am now), I set small yet challenging goals for the year ahead.
I chip away at these goals, finding satisfaction in each accomplishment.
It’s like balancing on a ledge—taking time, breath, and focus to find my footing, but once I do, I can smile and enjoy the moment.
This applies to everything in life. When I feel strong and balanced, I can handle anything.
In my youth, I wasted time and energy on an eating disorder and worries over things that won’t matter when I’m gone. I refuse to spend my older years consumed by the fear of another birthday. Instead, I’ll enjoy each one, no matter what.
If you know someone struggling with the idea of growing older—especially younger people, surprisingly—share this with them.
How have you coped with the fear of Aging if you’ve ever had it?
