Gambling
Why Do We Gamble?
Gambling, an activity where something of value is risked in hopes of gaining something of greater value, intrigues millions worldwide. What drives people to gamble? For many, it’s the excitement and unpredictability of the game. The possibility of winning big is enough to make the risk worthwhile. Gambling also offers a psychological thrill, with studies showing that the brain releases dopamine, the “feel-good” neurotransmitter, during gambling activities. The allure of potentially striking it rich keeps players coming back, but it’s essential to understand the psychology behind these behaviors to promote responsible gambling in everything we do whether it is gambling on our small business to grow, or gambling on our Retirement Planning or gambling in the casino.
Our experts in this area of the site explore the risks and rewards of gambling. Humans are inherently risk-takers, a trait hardwired into our psyche. The act of gambling offers a unique mix of risk and potential reward that can be thrilling. This excitement is often amplified by the uncertainty and the possibility of a life-changing win. At the same time, the ethical concerns of gambling must be addressed knowing that gambling can lead to addiction, which is known as pathological gambling, which has severe Mental Health and Depression implications.
Understanding why people gamble is complex, involving an interplay of biological, psychological, social, and economic factors. Each gambler’s motivation can be deeply personal and influenced by a variety of external factors. We all need to recognize these influences and help our family, our friends and ourselves make more informed decisions about our gambling behaviors.

“For example, like, even commercials, there’s that one commercial for the Indian casinos. And my wife loves the song, and she knows it’s actually a singer that’s produced it. And she always thinks about that casino, you know, she doesn’t gamble, but every time she hears that song, it goes back to that feeling like, oh yeah, it’s about the good time. It’s about, you know, gambling, right? So now we’re moving to association. So, the sound has a lot of association to, um, that, to that ‘expectation’ or the actual experience itself.” – Howard Lim This episode’s guest is …

I met with a family a few weeks ago for an introductory conversation. I’m always interested to learn about people’s history with money. It’s an open-ended question that allows for a multitude of interesting answers. This family explained that ~20 years ago, they received a significant lump sum payment. They reached out to a financial professional (a stock broker, e.g. Merrill Lynch or Morgan Stanley) in their town and entrusted him with their new-found money. That advisor recommended a single “hot stock.” You probably know where this is going.Within a couple months of…

Barbara, Can you write about "miracles" and how the hope/prayer for a miracle can make people miss what is in front of them? An internet search defines a miracle as: “a surprising and welcome event that is not explicable by natural or scientific laws and is therefore considered to be the work of a divine agency.” I, Barbara, define “a miracle” as "an event attributed to a supernatural being (God or gods), a miracle worker, a saint, or a religious leader.” It is an event that seems to defy all logic. With that definition, you have to be a pretty high stakes gambler to bet your life (…

There are a few broad categories that trigger people to reach out to me.Retirement planning is biggest. Major life changes (marriage, divorce, having kids) is a common reason, too.Another one, albeit slightly more unique: “I have a good handle on our finances, but I want to get you involved because my spouse needs someone trustworthy. If I get hit by a bus, I want you already involved to fully take the reins.”But somewhere in the Top 5 most common reasons is the rationale for today’s article:“I received a BIG sum of money…and I have no idea what to do next!”…
