Mind the Gap
The Only Person You are Destined to be is the Person You Decide to Be
– Ralph Waldo Emerson
Yes, a phrase originally heard on each of my wonderful visits to England. The reference was to the space between the platform and the door to the train (aka “subway” in New York City and elsewhere.) It’s a phrase meant to keep you safe no matter whether you are a child, adult, or have any challenging human conditions.
There are many gaps in everyday life worth minding, though for different reasons. Some, if not many, of those gaps are opportunities and become obvious when paying attention. Minding the gap can prompt one or many solutions to fill that gap.Â
Bringing this into the realm of your expertise, imagine you are scheduled to be interviewed as a podcast guest on the topic of licensing your Intellectual Property. You’re familiar with many industries where licensing Intellectual Property is an important thread in the fabric of that world. Professional Athletic teams have substantial and well-established revenue streams in licensing their logo to clothing and sports equipment manufacturers.
Then there are product inventors who license the use of their product or integration of the function it serves into some other delivery format than what was originally created.
Both of these examples fall into the general category of licensing (renting out) the right to use what the originator created, in exchange for payment. And people involved in those particular fields have only that method of doing business in common – renting out the use of property owned by one person or entity, in exchange for payment.Â
Plus, those are far from the only environments where licensing Intellectual Property exists. Content licensing is different from invented products or artistic logo designs, other than the connection of renting out (licensing) the use of some or all of the product in exchange for payment.
Each of the categories mentioned above has its own nuances, guidelines, boundaries, …and niches! The great news for you is that it probably won’t take you long to identify one or more gaps in your world to bring content licensing or a different perspective on your topic to those whose gap YOU will be minding!
