Keeping the Farm
“The meaning of life is to find your gift.
The purpose of life is to give it away.”
– Pablo Picasso
As a consultant, speaker, coach, author, or other subject matter expert, a concern you may have is ways to be generous with your knowledge “without giving away the farm.”
It’s pretty impossible to ever tell your reader or listener everything you know on your topic. Think of how many years you’ve been in your business, even if you are a newcomer. There is really no way you could tell anyone everything you know.
Even if you give them a LOT of information, they are not you. They process what they learned from you differently than you did when you learned it. You apply your knowledge differently because you are YOU and they are THEM.
It can be challenging to remember during a conversation with someone you view as a competitor and you worry even a little about taking your business out from under you.
Worry no more.
Focus on “what” and “why” when you talk about your expertise. Leave out the “how.”
Early on in my business, I held back sharing the formula I teach for writing tips. I did that for years, somehow concerned someone would copy my work and dilute my business. One day it became crystal clear that I could easily share the formula without an ounce of fear that anyone would run away with it because they weren’t me. I had my own approach for “how” I used that formula to ultimately sell over TWO MILLION tips booklets without spending a penny on advertising. The people who wanted to learn the “how” paid for that knowledge.
Yes, I slip several “how’s” into any presentation, to whet the audience’s appetite, giving them more value from the experience. Most of the content is “what” and “why.”
Does that ease your concerns as you move forward? Hopefully you’ve learned much earlier in your journey than it took me to learn it!! There’s now lots of “how” available in the SHOP at https://TipsProducts.com , with more becoming available every month!!
