Leading With Care in a Tough World

On the Breakfast Leadership Show, we had the pleasure of interviewing Bob DeKoch and Phil Clampitt about their insightful book Leading with Care in a Tough World. Their book is now available on Kindle. In addition, the authors have recently released two noteworthy studies that delve deeper into their research and findings, which many of you will undoubtedly find intriguing and valuable.

  • A study about strategic communication (or lack thereof) during the COVID pandemic based on interviews with public health officials, epidemiologists, physicians, media representatives, and other health care officials.  In general, they did not rate the effectiveness of communication very highly.   • The second study asks a simple question: does “leading with care” actually matter?  Based on survey responses from 100s of employees, this study suggests that caring leadership results in a) greater support of the organization’s direction, b) higher job satisfaction, and c) reduction in employee Stress levels. Leading with care is critical to effective leadership in today’s complex and dynamic business environment. When leaders approach their responsibilities with a genuine concern for the well-being and Growth of their team members, it fosters a positive and supportive work culture that drives Innovation, productivity, and employee engagement. By demonstrating empathy, compassion, and a genuine interest in their employees’ personal and professional development, leaders can build trust, inspire loyalty, and create an environment where people feel valued, heard, and motivated to perform at their best.

Moreover, leading with care extends beyond the boundaries of the workplace. When leaders exhibit care and consideration in their decisions and actions, it has a ripple effect that can positively influence the broader community, customers, and stakeholders. By prioritizing the needs and concerns of others, leaders can make a meaningful difference in the lives of those they serve, ultimately contributing to the long-term success and sustainability of the organization.
