Wearing Stripes In A Bonanza Of Clothing Items
Wearing stripes is something you can add to any outfit since the print is available in every type of clothing. Joanne, from our Ageless Style group, came up with the prompt about wearing stripes, so I wanted to show a bonanza of clothing and how we styled it.
Quote of the day: “If you want to make a permanent change, stop focusing on the size of your problems and start focusing on the size of you!” T. Harv Eker
What can I say about stripes? They are one of those prints that can be controversial.
I know many a women who won’t wear horizontal stripes because they imagine it makes them look bigger.
At this stage of my life, I think that is complete hogwash.
We have much more important things to worry about than if something makes us look big. And why in golly’s name is big bad in the first place.
So I hope to inspire you with our crew wearing stripes in almost any and every type of clothing, that you too can wear what you want, have fun, and style clothing because you like it. Not because it makes you look thinner or taller.
Valerie: Wearing Striped in a Dress
Valerie even brought out the styling guns by print mixing with her dress and scarf together.
And I love how she wore a colorful jacket with the outfit.
What Valerie told me is this “blazer” is from her working days and she’s so glad she didn’t purge it. It can be worn in Retirement to upgrade any outfit.
Charlotte: Striped Skirt
My mom opted to wear a striped skirt but at the last minute couldn’t find the one she had in mind. (It probably got purged in the move from Colorado to Arizona).
Instead, I had her wear a top over her striped dress to make it look like she’s wearing a skirt.
All three of us have a version of this material made into a dress as styled years back. Her top is the peasant top that we all wore last year. You’ll notice in the original styling how it’s much longer than today.
Insider tip: To shorten a top like this, put on a belt and then tuck the top up under it. I’ve shown this in a video.
Cathie-Wearing Stripes in Your Kimono
Cathie had this fabulous striped kimono to showcase with her look. It’s such a statement piece and she kept the look modern with denim shorts, fabulous cowboy boots and then that turquoise squash blossom necklace.
Insider tip: These types of Native American necklaces can run you an arm and a leg at jewelry places. If you want the look for less, there are many on Amazon.
Jodie-Wearing Stripes in a Vest
I love that these types of vests are back in style. This one has a pair of matching pants, but I didn’t wear it today. Instead, I paired it with a pair of cargo jeans that I just found secondhand.
The brand of jeans is one of those fast fashion brands, but by thrifting it, I consider that the best way to be more sustainable.
Insider tip: If you like wearing mule shoes, then let me suggest Sheec half socks that make them more comfortable.
Lesley: Striped Sneakers
Sometimes our footwear can make such a statement in an outfit. For example, if you are one who prefers solid colored clothing, then shoes that have any kind of print gives the look more interest.
This color combination is one of Lesley’s favorites, and the way she bossed around her short sleeve shirt to be a “jacket” is fabulous.
How she tied it is smart and the fact that the yellow tank shows up below the tied portion creates a wonderful proportion.
Insider tip: Tying the ends of the shirt by using a clear elastic takes away the bulk of a tied knot. If you don’t have these in your closet yet, you need them. They work for so many different applications.
Here are the old photos of the original crew wearing stripes.
Jodie: Wearing Stripes in a Blazer/Jacket
Addendum: Looking back at this outfit from over 6 years ago, the only clothing item, that isn’t in my closet at this time is the shoes. I’m not sure why I purged them, but I used to wear them all of the time.
But that jacket, top and jeans are still in my closet and still worn.
This is exactly the type of striped clothing item that so many people say they couldn’t wear. And I would say phooey to that. If the piece fits you well, then the print will not make you look big or be overpowering.
So when I found this wall full of different colored stripes, I thought it’d be a perfect backdrop.
I chose my white jeans to pair with this striped blazer. Even though we are way past summer, the white jeans work great on so many days. I showed all 3 of us wearing white in the winter last winter. If your white pants are super thin, then you may not want to wear them when it’s cold, otherwise, they are a great way to pop other colors.
Nancy: Striped Tunic
I think one of the best details about this tunic is that the sides hang longer than the front and have slits in them. That and the fact that the stripes are diagonal and color-blocked with the black material.
You can see that most of the time, Nancy does wear a layer under this tunic for warmth. She’s worn it often with a black turtleneck under it, but this day, she layered a black t-shirt under it.
Insider tip: Wear your workout leggings with tunics. Because what is the difference between workout leggings and non-workout leggings?
Charlotte: Blue Striped Blouse
This kind of blouse or even if it was a t-shirt type shirt is the kind that goes with everything. You could dress it down with jeans or wear it like my mom with a skirt.
Insider tip: If you prefer your scarf to stay in place and you’re wearing a shirt with buttons, you can button the scarf through the hole.
Thanks to one and all of you for your support. It means more than you know!
