Unique Things To Do In Palm Springs

As part of Where Bloggers Live, we are talking about vacations, so I thought I’d share one of our more recent holiday getaways with my family.
While I’m sharing a small sampling of ideas of unique things to do in Palm Springs, California, I’m in no way covering all the fun that could be had.

Quote of the day: “Man cannot discover new oceans unless he has the courage to lose sight of the shore.” Andre Gide

This holiday getaway was in December of 2022. We had three days to enjoy the area, and for people over 50, our goal is to have a great time without killing ourselves, meaning to do fun things, but also have time to rest and relax.

People Over 50 With Unique Things To Do In Palm Springs

Backstory: My family consists of my husband, Rob, my mother, Charlotte, and my stepmom, Nancy. The original crew of Jodie’s Touch of Style.
Years ago we came up with the idea to spend Christmas together as an activity instead of exchanging gifts. Part of this reason is because we don’t “need” anything and it’s been incredible to collect these memories instead.

Palm Springs Aerial Tramway

It’s touted as the world’s largest rotating tramcar. And even if you’ve traveled in a dozen other trams in different cities, this one will knock your socks off.
You get to Travel 2.5 miles up from Coachella Valley to the peak of San Jacinto peak.

Before getting into the tram, there is a museum located in the Valley Station that gives you a bunch of very interesting facts and details.

Yet also as you ascend up, you will hear more history and get to see the amazing feat that it was to create this tram system.

Insider detail: The tram was completed in 1963, but the rotating car was an addition later on in 2000.
It does not rotate fast and is no cause for concern. It’s as slow and gentle as the big Ferris wheels of the day.

Because you are going up so high, the temperatures are a good 30 degrees colder at the top of the tram from where you started. Beware, and take suitable attire.

Recycled Art

Kenny Irwin’s Found Objects Sculptures-Also Called Robolights

Now here’s a sight you don’t see just anywhere. It definitely classifies as one of the unique things to do in Palm Springs.

Kenny Irwin is an artist and has transformed his yard in Palm Springs into an art installation composed of sculptures made from recycled materials.

In the photos above, you may recognize the turquoise giant’s feet as being tires. The list is endless of household and everyday items that are transformed into these sculptures that are then painted.

Insider tip: You can walk by the house any time to see many of the sculptures. I had texted the phone number to see if we could tour it, but the timing didn’t work out.

Museum Of Midcentury Things In Palm Springs

Unique Things To Do in Palm Springs- Modernism Museum

There are many museums located in and around Palm Springs, and while this may not seem like the most unique thing to do when visiting, let me just say, that some museums are better than others.

We happened to encounter a treasure trove along the downtown shopping main street right next to a Mexican restaurant.
Unfortunately, it is permanently closed at the moment as reported by Google.

By stepping inside this museum, you go back in time to the 1940s, ’50s, and ’60s.
My mom was all aflutter when we found an entire wall dedicated to owls.

Outdoor Art

Sure, there is an art museum in Palm Springs, but you can enjoy a variety of pieces just by walking around the downtown area.

The Marilyn Monroe larger-than-life statue is iconic, but other exhibitions are showcased for a limited time.

Insider detail: The “Babies by the Czech artist and provocateur David Černý are not in Palm Springs at this time. Instead, there are Pickleball courts in its place.

Historical Society Home Tours

The Historical Society of Palm Springs has a boatload of different walking, biking, and private vehicle tours available.

We took the Golden Era tour which walked us around the Las Palmas development for a good 120 minutes. There are over 12-16 different tours available depending on what day you would prefer and where you would like to go.

For instance, tour around Frank Sinatra’s neighborhood, Twin Palms Estates, or even The Mesa where stars such as Sonny and Cher as well as Suzanne Sommers lived.

Our docent was very informative and had a folder of photos of the stars in case you didn’t recognize certain names. It wasn’t a cheap excursion, but well worth the cost.

Welcome to Jodie’s Touch of Style. I’m here to prove that it’s never too late to look great. Clothing and style are meant to showcase your inner personality. So let’s have fun and try new things.

It’s not just about me on this blog, but also my mother and friend. We get to showcase not only different decades of life but also different body shapes and unique personal styles.

The post Unique Things To Do In Palm Springs appeared first on Jodie’s Touch of Style.

Jodie's Touch of Style showcases how it's never too late to look great including other older women and myself talking about fashion, beauty, and lifestyle issues.

As a retired dentist, Jodie takes her love of clothing and shopping and has come to find her superpowers in styling the same item in many ways. She is also a huge advocate for embracing our age and bodies. Getting old is a wonderful thing and learning to love ourselves while it happens is very freeing.

Looking great can happen no matter what age, shape or budget, as we show on Jodie's Touch of Style.
