Simplistic Options Of Different Types of Tops-3 Lengths

When creating a versatile wardrobe, different types of tops are the unsung heroes that hold your outfits together. And while “trends” may come and go, I always like to figure out stylish ways to use what we have in our closets.

Quote of the day: “Learn how to be happy with what you have while you pursue all that you want.” Jim Rohn

The crew is diving into three different types of tops based on their lengths: tunic, mid-length, and cropped. Each offers something special and can be made to look wonderful, whether you’re dressing up, staying casual, or aiming to balance proportions.

Don’t be the type of woman who says she can’t wear something. Instead, believe that with some “bossing” around, you can make it fabulous. Remember, not all tops are created equal and what is classified as “cropped” may be the perfect length for a short-waisted woman.

Considering I believe in variety and having fun with our closet, I’m sure it’s no surprise that I think you ought to have all of these options in your wardrobe.

As an added bonus, I also had all 3 of us layer under our different types of tops with a variety of options.

Tops are a common theme on my site, so if you want more inspiration, make sure to check out these favorites.

As much as I love my site, Jodie’s Touch of Style, I really enjoy putting together my daily emails. I consider my emails an extension of my blog chocked full of positive inspiration that one friend calls a “Variety Show.”
I include articles, videos, and posts that strike my fancy and since I have no siblings to share with, I share with you.

1. Nancy- Tunic Tops

Welcome back to Nancy, my stepmom who resides in Denver. She visited us over the holidays. She traveled with us to San Diego and joined us on the blog. If you are new here, her age is between Charlotte and myself. She DOES NOT describe herself as a fashionista and rates comfort over anything. Yet she humors me and allows me to include her in our photos.

Tunic tops were the perfect addition when leggings were on top of the charts. Therefore, you probably have a bunch already in your closet.
While we don’t see them as “trendy” now, there are many ways to still wear them and make them modern.

In fact, I have many ideas about wearing tunics including layering over it with a skirt or pulling up the extra material in a knot.

Why Tunics Work:

Tunic tops are versatile, flattering, and ideal for those days when you want to feel comfortable but still look put-together. Their longer length provides coverage, making them an excellent choice for pairing with slimmer bottoms.

Insider tip: I always love it when tunics have slits on the sides. This gives them more movement and vertical detail.

How Nancy Layered: For this idea of different types of tops, it’s good to remember we can layer under them with a variety of options. Nancy mirrored the neckline of her tunic with a long-sleeved t-shirt under it.
If you don’t have a shirt with the same neckline, a turtleneck would also work wonderfully.

Details: Even though Nancy’s tunic has a graphic print she added a gold necklace to the mix. This creates a more intentional look.

Instead of wearing tight leggings, Nancy donned a pair of straight-leg ponte pants.

For her footwear, she wore her white sneakers and accessorized with colorful jewelry.

2. Charlotte- Mid-Length Tops

Mid-length tops—those that hit just around the hip or slightly below—are the Goldilocks of the top world: not too long, not too short, but just right. These tops work with almost any bottom and offer endless styling possibilities.

While this option of different types of tops may be the favorite, it’s not always easy to find that “perfect” length since we all have different measurements.

Insider tip: That’s why I like to use my “beltless belt” at times. I wear it under the longer top to tuck the hemline and slide it under the elastic belt to make it the length I prefer.

Why Mid-Length Tops Work:

Mid-length tops are wardrobe staples because they’re universally flattering and easy to style. They provide enough coverage to feel comfortable but are short enough to create clean lines when tucked or untucked.

How Charlotte Layered: For my mom’s outfit, she layered her mid-length top over a collared top. This is one of my favorite options for a crew neck sweater because it gives it a vertical element as well as overlaps the top.

Details: Mom is showing how “matching” a necklace to your sweater can make it disappear. Luckily the necklace has a majority of white on it which contrasts nicely. If the entire necklace was yellow like the bottom portion, it would all be invisible.

Charlotte did match her sneakers to her pants so while they are comfy, they aren’t a focal point.

What is a fun focus is her purse. Carrying a print purse is a fabulous way to bring whimsey to your look especially if you are wearing all solid-colored pieces.

3. Jodie- Cropped Tops

Cropped tops aren’t just for the younger crowd—when styled thoughtfully, they can work for all ages. Two key ideas are balancing proportions and/or layering.

Since we are seeing a lot of high-waisted pants again, you’ll want to explore the idea of cropped tops to pair with them.
But they can also be fun to layer over longer tops and show both layers even at the bottom portion.

While you could pick this outfit apart if you concentrate on only the proportions, I think there are enough fun elements to cut the mustard.

Why Cropped Tops Work:

Cropped tops add a playful edge to any outfit. They’re perfect for highlighting your waistline or creating interesting layers, making them a fun and modern addition to your wardrobe.

Insider tip: A top like the one I’m wearing is even more ideal because, with the ties, you can make it longer or shorter depending on your mood.

How Jodie Layered: Sheer tops have become one of my favorite layering pieces lately. This sheer turtleneck has some glitter and texture which makes it even more interesting.

Details: With the advent of fleece-lined tights, wearing shorts in winter can be functional and just as warm as wearing jeans.

Insider tip: I’ve also been known to layer two pairs of tights to make them warm enough for the weather.

I wore my black floral Cariuma sneakers. There are 2 reasons I love this brand so much.
1-If you believe what they say, they are incredibly sustainable and eco-conscious.
2-A couple times a year, I am invited to fill out a survey and then they send me a $30 or $40 coupon.

3 Different Types Of Tops On Women

Final Thoughts

Different types of tops—tunic, mid-length, and cropped—offer endless opportunities to express your personal style.

The best closet is one that has a variety of options. If you only buy the same lengths of tops, then you may struggle with the silhouette of pants when they change over time.
Because the silhouette will change…it’s a fact of life.

Since fashion is always evolving, we should too. And having tricks and ideas of how to style all different types of tops makes you successful.
