Popular Ideas When You Have A Bad Hair Day

It’s part of life, right? I confess that it used to be so stressful when I would have a bad hair day. My mood took a 180 and I would get so upset.
But the more I’ve lived, the more I realize that having tricks up my sleeve for those days makes all the difference.

Quote of the day: “Am I letting matters that are out of my control Stress me out? Anonymous

The best part about having these ideas?

Many of these tricks don’t just fix the problem—they actually enhance your outfit and make it look different and intentional.

It’s only been in the last 10 years that I’ve come to the realization that most people don’t concentrate on my hair anyway. So it seems silly to let it be a factor in my mood. Especially when I’ve figured out many fashionable solutions for those days when your hair just won’t cooperate.

1. Headbands

A headband is a lifesaver when your hair is acting up. Whether you go for a wide, padded headband for a sophisticated touch or a stretchy fabric one, headbands help keep flyaways in check while giving you an effortlessly put-together look.

Pro tip: This works best when the back of your hair still looks okay and it just needs to be tamed.

Think about the options:

  • Not all headbands are created equal. If you struggle with the fact that they cause pain behind your ears, my friend recommended an expensive brand. While most of their headbands are out of my budget, they occasionally have one or two that won’t break the bank. The one I purchased last year was from Amazon but isn’t available now. But there are a couple of these brands in the widget below.
  • Athletic headbands are usually more comfy because they don’t have pressure points.
  • You could file this under the next category also but using a scarf is a great option that doesn’t cause pressure behind your ears.

Pro tip: When using a scarf, it’s helpful to add a bobby pin or two so it doesn’t move around.

Don’t forget that hair accessories can also be used. There are a variety of clips, claws, and barrettes that can fix your hair no matter what length it is.
My mom has shown options in the past as did I when I had a pixie cut.

2. Headscarves Help for a Bad Hair Day

A silk or cotton scarf is a game-changer when dealing with unruly hair. Not only does it cover up less-than-perfect locks, but it also adds a pop of color and personality to your outfit.
I wrote an entire article about wearing headscarves if you want to see other options.

Don’t be put off by the shape of your scarf, you can use almost any size for different headscarf options.

Think about the options: (let me share some ideas from Pinterest)

Pro tip: This option takes getting used to only because we aren’t used to it. It’s like wearing a hat…the more you do it and see yourself in it, the more it seems fabulous.

3. Hats

On days when your hair is beyond help, a hat can be your best friend. Depending on the length of your hair and how much you need to cover can dictate which hats will work best.

Need beginner tips on wearing a hat? I’ve got you covered (pun intended).

Think about the options:

  • A wide-brim hat adds a touch of drama as Lesley has shown in the past. This is also a great example of how you can add a scarf under the hat if your hair needs full coverage.
  • A beanie is perfect for a laid-back, street-style look and keeps you warm. It’s also a good option in the wind and perfect for full coverage.
  • A baseball cap gives off an effortlessly cool vibe and works well with both casual and athleisure outfits. There are many that have more of a feminine vibe as Lesley has proven. Also good for full coverage.
  • Fedoras are for men and women. In fact, Charlotte has borrowed one of Rob’s fedoras in the past. These will show some hair depending on your hair’s length.
  • Berets add that chic glamour and you can still let some hair hang out or not.
  • Rancher hats are hugely popular. I consider them the straw hats of the winter.

4. Faux Hair Options For When You Have a Bad Hair Day

If your hair is not its best, think about clip-in ponytails or hair extensions. These are a quick way to add volume and create a polished hairstyle in minutes.

There are so many different faux hair options available.

Think about the options:

  • Clawclip ponytails are super comfy. I can wear mine all day without issues. BTW, they aren’t all created equal. If one isn’t good, send it back and try another brand. Or I’ve painted mine to match my hair color.
  • Hair buns come in both straight hair and curly hair so it looks more natural. The best part is you can leave it as is or wrap a scarf around it.
  • Halo hair extensions are usually easier to put on since they are all one piece. I wouldn’t say this covers everything when you have a bad hair day, but it does add thickness to make it look better. Here is a video of how I put them in from when I first bought mine.

Pro tip: I’ve had my hair bun for over a year, and it’s still going strong. I bought the ‘brown & light blonde’ color and the match is amazing.

Sometimes, the best way to fix a bad hair day is to completely switch it up! Wigs have come a long way, and there are so many natural-looking options that allow you to have fun with different colors, cuts, and styles without any commitment.

Pro tip: The best way to make a wig look good on you is to take it to your hairdresser and have it styled to your face shape. Yes, it’s an added expense, but well worth it.

As much as I love my site, Jodie’s Touch of Style, I really enjoy putting together my daily emails. I consider my emails an extension of my blog that is chocked full of positive inspiration that one friend calls a “Variety Show.”
I include articles, videos, and posts that strike my fancy and since I have no siblings to share with, I share with you.

Final Thoughts: Own Your Look, No Matter What

Don’t let your hair affect your outfit or mood. If you have a variety of these options just in case, you’ll be ready for when you have a bad hair day.
Because we all know it happens. Don’t be unprepared.

I think of these options as secrets for turning a hair disaster into a fashion statement.
