Creativity With How To Wear A Kimono

This is an Exercise in how to get more wear out of the things we already have in our closet. Getting creative with how to wear a kimono is good for your wallet and will help you build new brain pathways that help you think differently.
See? I’m not just here to help you with fashion and style. I want you to grow and learn. Or as I liken it to, I can teach you to fish instead of just handing you a fish on a platter.

Quote of the day: “You are the boss of your clothes. Change them up. Layer them creatively. Have fun.” Jodie Filogomo (me)

Your Usual Ways Of How To Wear A Kimono

Styling a Kimono-Traditionally

There’s nothing wrong with styling your kimono traditionally as a topper.

Yet, I do not see these items as popular as they used to be. Therefore, if you love the material, print, or color of your kimono, I have been experimenting with how to wear a kimono creatively.
Remember, what I’m showing is definitely not the end all.

Go in your closet and play with your clothes. It’s time well spent for many reasons.

Insider tip: The best thing to remember is that a kimono is just a piece of material sewn in certain spots. You can change it around to fit your needs.

I always love to figure out a multitude of ways to wear the same thing. You’ll get a ton of inspiration from these other articles too.

I came up with 5 easy ways to wear your kimono creatively. Now you can get more cost per wear out of the item.

Wear a Kimono as a Top

There’s no reason not to wear your kimono by itself. Think of it like a cardigan and once you close it up, it’s a shirt.

Ways to keep it closed:

  • Belt it
  • Magnets (found on Amazon)
  • If you don’t mind putting holes in the fabric, you can use safety pins or brooches.
  • I used a clip-on earring at the top to hold it together.

Insider tip: I wore a sports bra under the kimono since it was sheer and I wouldn’t feel so exposed if it gaped.

Styling a Kimono as a Strapless Top

Along the same lines as above, you can fold the top down and tie the sleeves or extra material to create a sleeveless top.

For my example, I held the ends together with a pearl shawl clip (similar to the ones found on Amazon). Because I was still wearing my sports bra, I also tucked the ends under the bra strap for stability.

Kimono Worn under a Vest

Now that you have the idea of how to wear a kimono as a top, why not layer over it?

I styled this pink sheer kimono under a menswear vest for sleeves and added length. Because it’s very unstructured, you can pull the material in different ways to make longer or shorter sleeves.

Insider tip: I always like to remember the words “Over and Under” when it comes to layering. A clothing item is usually layered one way (either over something or under something else) yet most times you can make it work both ways.

Layer a Cropped Top over the Kimono

This idea is not much different than wearing the kimono under a vest but this will work with a multitude of sleeveless/strappy/strapless tops.

Remember, you are imagining your kimono to be a top, so feel free to layer over it with anything.

Another reminder to play in your closet. Some items will look better layered over your kimono than others. Just because one item doesn’t work, don’t think they all won’t work.

How to Wear a Kimono as a Skirt

Now it’s time to transform your kimono into a skirt. Remember, it’s just a piece of material, so you can basically think of it like a scarf and wrap it around the bottom half of your body.

You’ve seen this kimono from years ago worn traditionally. I didn’t wear the pink one as a skirt because it seemed too sheer. Which would be fine as a swimsuit cover-up, but I wanted to show it as an actual skirt.

I placed a magnet at both the waist and the bottom panel so it wouldn’t blow open.

So what do you think? Does this give you inspiration to layer your kimono in different ways and have fun with your clothes?
