4 Ideas: Baggy Fit But Make It Cute

My friend, Tresi reached out with a suggestion for styling an item with a baggy fit but not look like she was wearing someone else’s clothing.

Quote of the day: “Knowing is not enough; we must apply. Being willing is not enough; we must do.” Leonardo Da Vinci

While I believe in finding clothing that fits our bodies, there’s also a great reason to incorporate clothing with a baggy fit at times.
Why?

  • Slouchy seems more casual
  • Good for pairing with something more fitted
  • Cooler in hot weather
  • Gives off a different vibe
  • Having different sizes in your closet is a good thing

I always think it’s beneficial to have a multitude of styles and fits in our wardrobe. If everything fits like a glove, then what happens when you gain 10 pounds? This is real life, and that happens to us all.
Or what happens when you try to incorporate a different style into your closet? You can’t make it work because everything is one style only.

Insider tip: You know how people say they evaluate an item to make sure it goes with 3 things in your closet? I believe we can all find at least 10 things the “new thing” will go with if we open up our minds and get creative.

If you constantly buy the same thing over and over, you will always look the same, Change is good and so is variety in our clothing.

So Tresi’s challenge was a fun way to wear a couple of baggy fit tops.

This subject is not new to my site as I’ve had fun with many baggy fit items in the past.

Baggy Fit Tops

Here are the 2 tops. Both are a tad different to give you variety so you can find ways to make it work from your closet.

On the left–Is an Old Navy yellow and white striped button-down shirt. It’s a size Medium (I usually wear an XS or S), but it’s also a boyfriend cut which translates to a slouchier style. I found it while thrifting for only $1.

On the right–A Lush brand polka dot top from Your Revolving Closet. As you can see from the site, there’s no indication that it’s a baggy fit. I received this in a Small size but it’s quite generous. And if I didn’t have these tricks up my sleeve, I might have missed out on wearing it.

So let’s explore the 4 ways I worked on styling my baggy fit tops to look cute and modern.

1-Create Openings & Show Skin

First and foremost, when you have a baggy fit for something, you don’t want it to overpower you.
One way to counteract that is to show skin.

Being totally buttoned up and covered can be a recipe for frumpiness. Especially when the item has a baggy fit.

I cuffed the sleeves, made sure to unbutton from the top as much as I was comfortable, and then unbuttoned the bottom to create an upside-down “v”.

Insider tip: Look closely and you’ll see magnets holding back the lower hems. Otherwise, they fall together and don’t create that opening.

2-Layer a Fitted Top Over

This reminds me of the “aha” moment I had when thinking about styling kimonos recently. Why not wear your kimono like a top?

And it’s the same for a baggy fit top. Wear a more fitted top over it and have it drape underneath it.

Insider tip: if one item is silky, you might need a magnet or two to keep the top layer in place over the underlayer.

3-Wear a Dress Over It

I used this same trick of layering a dress over the baggy fit item for each top. This is a great way to transition to the cooler weather and helps when you have a backless item that you want to wear a traditional bra with.

Insider tip: Don’t discount a certain dress for this trick. You might think that a certain style or sleeves won’t work, but you might be surprised. Be like Mikey and try it…you might like it.

4-Belt It

I heard a rule once that you should only belt a fitted item. Hogwash.

Belting an item that has a baggy fit can be a great strategy. What’s important is that you don’t try to tighten the belt too much because then you get a lot of extra material that can look wonky.

Originally I was thinking of suggesting that you only use wide belts for this idea, but I believe you can make it cute with a thin belt too.
The secret? Just try it and do some poofing in the back.

Insider tip: Belts are one of the 5 items I always search for at a thrift store. Considering the savings to find them preloved, you can have them in all shapes and sizes.
