Tips for Rapidly Moving Beyond Failure
According to the literature on the topic, on average, humans speak approximately 16,000 words each day.
When you consider the average news article is around 800 words, the average blog post is between 250-300, and social media posts recommend between 60 and 150 words. With many, much longer, it is no surprise people feel buried in words.
I certainly do.
Borrowing from Mr. Churchill, I remind myself, my Coaching clients, and everyone with whom I come in contact that, “Success isn’t permanent, and failure isn’t fatal.”
Easy words to recite (Churchill’s words flow off the tongue) but more challenging to live. If only that truth had been woven more fully into our childhood. Maybe the concept would feel less foreign today.
Here are three tips to remind me of the impermanence of success and maximize a learning opportunity when I make a blunder and fall on my face.
- I find someone I can help. Active service gets me out of my head and focused on something more immediate than my perceived success or failure.
- I move my body. Sometimes a full-blown workout. Other times, a brisk walk, but I make a point of moving my body. I experience fewer negative thoughts when I focus on my body and do not spiral into my thoughts.
- I make noise. Sometimes I sing (in the car or shower), sometimes I cry into my pillow, and sometimes I hike far into the woods and scream as loud as possible. Releasing pent-up energy is freeing and moves my healing process forward.
If you get tripped up by small or large setbacks or failures, check out these three easy-to-execute tips. If you feel more support is needed, a robust coaching conversation may help you discover the truth you need to propel you into your next fantastic life chapter. The chat is free.
And never forget, there is Life After Failure.
