Attract the Right Job or Clientele:

Are You Guilty of Over-committing?

A familiar theme is recognizing that there are two sides to most situations, and we must stop, look, and listen for possibilities for changing our habits. For example, we frequently suggest that we are to work for the greater good and ensure that everyone feels they have won something. However, what may stand in the way is offering too much, hence the question, are you guilty of over-committing?

My Story

Planning for business and personal matters is easy as I’m an active goal-setter. However, it applies to routine days for the most part. But a small percentage of the time, unusual opportunities present themselves that typically deserve an immediate ‘Yes! However, a quick, positive response is only sometimes in our favor, no matter the opportunity’s attractiveness.

First and foremost, completing what we promise to others is vital. Otherwise, we will incur poor word of mouth, adversely affecting business and our reputation. Our ongoing focus should be on growing a returning and referring clientele. Otherwise, if we are to consistently delay the delivery of goods and services or admit we need to know how to complete what we promise, we drain ourselves of trust and clientele.

Considerations to Avoid Over-committing

  1. Admit upfront what you do not know.
  2. Estimate the time necessary for learning all associated aspects of the project.
  3. Verify the expectations of you and your delivery.
  4. Learn how to implement the idea beyond expectations to uphold admiration.
  5. Decide whether your participation will fit within your timeline to complete necessary projects.

Scenario Example

An offer arose unexpectedly to partake in a new program. Remarkably, it is the type I envisioned, but I need help. Participation is the better way to go. However, I will still need to gain the talent or knowledge to meet expectations. And herein lies the problem: It’s a delicate balance for me as it will be challenging to deliver upon all expectations. More research is necessary for me to make a better decision. Underlying the dilemma is the goal to avoid over-committing and eliminate unnecessary Stress.

Your Story: Guilty of Over-committing

It is a rare person who can say they never over-commit, so if you have, don’t feel embarrassed. Instead, use the scenario as a learning lesson to establish guidelines for yourself. An ongoing theme is to work for the greater good; however, it is only possible if you save time for your work and commitment to ongoing Education.

  1. A better route to take is to ask the following questions upfront:
  2. What is the overall goal of the project?
  3. How do you see me participating?
  4. Behind the scenes, what will I need to learn?
  5. Will you be helping with instruction, or will I be responsible for the learning?
  6. Who else, if anyone, will be involved?
  7. What is your timeline to put the project into action?
  8. Will fees be applied?

Not bothering to ask the questions above can sadly lead to a highly stressful situation by not realizing the time commitment involved. Additionally, although the project may be a community experience, some organizations charge fees for those who contribute their time and talent. It’s necessary to plan expenses to keep your private projects afloat.

Once you have the answers to your question, take quiet time to reconsider your involvement. Most importantly, decide whether the stress will be too great or if it will be a project you will enjoy. Another bonus is that should you accept, you will likely meet people with similar priorities. Expanding on the theme, your new collaborators may have additional ideas that can springboard business for all.

We each have one life; we are to make it our goal to live it as we desire without regret.

In Conclusion: Guilty of Over-committing

We must review what matters most before adding additional strategies to our business plan. It’s not selfish, but necessary to put our priorities at the top of the list to accomplish our vision plus more. Ultimately, what others think matters less than what you believe, strive to achieve, and eventually feel successful in later years.

Elinor Stutz International Best-Selling Author

Elinor Stutz broke through barriers long before doing so was popular. Against all the odds, she defied the theme “women can’t sell” to become the top producer at every company she ever worked for, ignoring attempts to get her to quit.

Eleven years later, I lay motionless on a stretcher with an irreparably broken neck. Two visions appearing before me, and a brilliant gold light encasing my entire body, gave me a reason to believe I would recover. I wholeheartedly knew I was about to empower audiences far and wide. At the moment, I negotiated a full recovery with the promise to be of service. The surgeon and hospital staff anointed me with the title “The Walking Miracle.”

As the CEO of Smooth Sale, Stutz adapted the motto, “Believe, Become, Empower.” Believe in yourself; Become the person you envision; Empower your audience to do the same. Stutz is on the Social Media Committee for Inclusion Allies Coalition devoted to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.
