Rise and Shine! The Science Behind Waking Up Early

In a world that often glorifies the hustle and bustle, people are catching onto the benefits of waking up early. Science has revealed a myriad of reasons why rising with the sun can set the tone for a more productive and fulfilling day.

At the heart of the science is the concept of circadian rhythms, often referred to as our internal biological clocks. These rhythms dictate the ebb and flow of our body’s functions over 24 hours. The circadian rhythm is influenced by external cues, primarily the light-dark cycle of the day. When we wake up early and expose ourselves to natural light, it helps align our internal clock with the world around us, optimizing our biological functions for the day ahead.

Research has shown that aligning our activities with our biological clocks can lead to improved mood, alertness, and overall cognitive performance. Waking up early allows us to tap into this natural synchronization, helping us feel more energized and focused throughout the day.

The early hours of the day also play a crucial role in hormonal regulation. Cortisol, often known as the stress hormone, naturally peaks at this time, providing a burst of energy to kickstart the day. Inversely, Melatonin, the hormone responsible for inducing Sleep, decreases as we wake. This hormonal shift contributes to increased alertness, improved mood, and enhanced cognitive function during the early hours.

Additionally, morning light exposure, particularly sunlight, triggers the production of serotonin, the neurotransmitter associated with mood regulation. Higher serotonin levels increase happiness, setting a positive tone for your day. Research also suggests that the prefrontal cortex, the section of the brain responsible for decision-making and complex thinking, is more active in the morning. This heightened cognitive function early in the day can lead to better problem-solving abilities and improved overall productivity.

A recent study even showed that you are more likely to have a productive day with a positive mindset if you wake up the first time your alarm sounds. Stop hitting the snooze button and get after it! The day is waiting!

I come from a large Italian family. I’m number seven in the line of ten kids!

When my dad passed away some years ago, I was fortunate enough to be there as the end was coming. I was standing just to the right of his hospital bed; he was lying there with his eyes closed. All of a sudden, Dad opens his eyes. He looks up at the ceiling with a look of peace – and maybe accomplishment – on his face. Then he closes his eyes for the last time. I guess out of instinct, I reached down and kissed him on that prickly cheek one last time. My dad left a legacy in that life well lived! A legacy based on three main principles: Family, Service, and Dedication. I do what I do to carry on that legacy to the best of my ability.
