Breaking the Stigma: Overcoming Imposter Syndrome in Medicine

Imposter syndrome is a phenomenon that affects many people in their personal and professional lives. It is characterized by persistent doubts about one’s own abilities and feelings of inadequacy, despite evidence to the contrary. Those who experience imposter syndrome often feel like they are “faking it” or that they are undeserving of their accomplishments.

There are many factors that can contribute to imposter syndrome, such as a lack of confidence or self-esteem, constant comparison to others, and societal expectations. Individuals who have experienced discrimination or bias may be particularly susceptible to imposter syndrome, as they may question whether their accomplishments were truly earned or if they were given preferential treatment.

Imposter syndrome can have a significant impact on an individual’s Mental Health and career. It can lead to Anxiety, Depression, and Burnout, as well as limit opportunities for Growth and advancement. It is important for individuals who experience imposter syndrome to recognize it and seek support from friends, family, or mental health professionals.

Dr. Sapna Shah-Haque, MD is a board certified Internal Medicine physician. She was born and raised in Kansas, and attended medical school at the University of Kansas [KU] School of Medicine. She completed her Internal Medicine residency at KU-Wichita as well. After experiencing burnout herself, and watching other physician colleagues burn out, it became a passion of hers to look into different aspects of burnout. While the system does need to change, as it is broken, this podcast is a way to reach physicians and possibly shed light on what is not an isolated situation.
