How To Wear A Printed Skirt-Colorful Variations

If there’s one piece in my closet that always brings joy, it’s a fabulous printed skirt! (Who am I kidding, everything in my closet brings me joy.)
Which is why I thought it would be fun to discuss how to wear a printed skirt using my color recipe.

Quote of the day: “No exact recipe for today. Gather all available ingredients and whip yourself up something delicious.– LIN-MANUEL MIRANDA

Just like the quote, this isn’t an exact recipe. But it’s a template of how to wear a printed skirt which I always love because they are fun, vibrant, and versatile.

It’s not every day that the 3 of us all have the same item, but when this skirt showed up at our favorite local boutique, Just Be Youtiful, Lesley and I both ran over and purchased it.

Insider discount: Just Be Youtiful will ship in the US and use code Jtouch15 for a discount. Signing up for her emails is the best way to see her new products, and/or follow her on Facebook.

By the way, Lesley wanted to point out that THIS skirt has the best twirlability. While it’s not something you can always see in 2D photos, it does make you feel wonderful when wearing it.

Color Recipe

Women always seem to ask me “What color should I wear with this?”, So I thought I wanted to come up with something that would be helpful.

The first time that I talked about this color recipe was with a pair of print shorts. Even though many women don’t wear shorts anymore, the concept works for any clothing item.

That’s why I continued to use this idea with a pair of silk pants as well as solid colored pants. But as I stated, the idea can work with anything including a sweater or other prints like animal prints.

Here’s an easy way to remember the color recipe:

  1. Style a neutral from the print–This is easily something you already do.
  2. Pair up with a color from the print–Another easy task as we’ve been trained to do this.
  3. Mix in a neutral NOT in the print–Since neutrals seem understated, this is the best nonmatching way to start getting creative with this recipe.
  4. Choose a color NOT in the print–This may be hard, but take one of the colors in the print and ask what color is a favorite pairing with it. For example with a blue and white print, ask yourself what is your favorite color to pair with blue. For Lesley that would be yellow, so yellow would be a wonderful addition to a blue and white print item.
  5. Now try mixing with another print–I’d call this the advanced stage, and once you start playing with 2 or more prints, it can be fun and addictive.

Just like you modify a food recipe with other ingredients when you don’t have what it calls for, there are other ways to use this color recipe. As I showcased with green items, you could break it down by neutrals, brights, and pastels.

The fact that you stretch yourself to pair different colors with the same thing is a step in the right direction as it makes your closet bigger, allows you to be thrifty, and builds new brain pathways.

1. Charlotte-Neutral from the Print

When in doubt, you can never go wrong with a neutral top that’s already in the print. Charlotte shows this beautifully with her 3/4 length sleeve knit top. The white ties in seamlessly with the skirt’s background, creating a cohesive and polished outfit.

Insider detail: While a pleated maxi like this usually calls for a crop top or tucked top, my mom kept her t-shirt untucked. Because the tee is fitted and not too long, it works. Since the maxi is to Charlotte’s ankles, the untucked top still gives a 1/3 to 2/3 proportion.

Details:
-Charlotte’s necklace is long and almost dainty, yet has a variety of colorful beads on it that mirror the skirt perfectly.
-I love how my mom doesn’t match the purse to the shoes. She opts for a teal-colored purse and white flats.

Style tip: Gone are the days you need to wear heels with skirts. I know it’s embedded in our thinking, but flats and sneakers are just as stylish and very modern.

As much as I love my site, Jodie’s Touch of Style, I really enjoy putting together my daily emails. I consider my emails an extension of my blog that is chocked full of positive inspiration that one friend calls a “Variety Show.”
I include articles, videos, and posts that strike my fancy and since I have no siblings to share with, I share with you.

2. Lesley- Color from the Print

Matching a top to one of the colors in the print is an easy way to create a harmonious outfit. Lesley had oodles of colors to choose from for this idea.
She chose a soft yellow tee and then turquoise sandals and accents.

Details:
-I love how Lesley also incorporated metallic accessories with the turquoise ones. It’s a nice mix so the turquoise isn’t overpowering.

Style tip: Remember that the best way to show off a necklace is to choose one that is a contrasting color from your top. If Lesley had worn a yellow necklace, it would blend in and be invisible.

3. Jodie- Neutral NOT in the Print

Now, here’s where we have to push ourselves against how we normally pair colors.

My outfit showcases a neutral NOT found in the print. I chose grey but black or tan would have worked also.

Details:
-This cardigan is older than I am as my mom had it in college. That’s the thing about clothes…they can last a long time if taken care of properly. They also last longer when you don’t wear the same thing all the time which is the advantage of having a large closet.
-Instead of styling a necklace, I used a clip-on earring at the “v” of my t-shirt.

Style tip: Grey is an underappreciated neutral. It tones down bright prints nicely and has a range of shades.

4. Color NOT in the Print

If you’re feeling adventurous, why not pick a bold color that’s completely absent from the print? That’s why I chose a mesh red top for this outfit.
I also was thinking about purple or kelly green.

Styling tip: Another way to use this prompt is to pick a different shade of a color that is in the print. For example, take the color peach. Peach would be considered a lighter shade of orange in the skirt.

Details:
-I layered a red cami under the mesh hoodie. The texture of the mesh adds depth to the look.
-Since my top is so bold, I kept the footwear neutral with this pair of Mary Janes. This shoe brand is my gold standard for comfy shoes and I reviewed them and showcased different ways to style them recently.
-Even though it’s not super obvious, I wore a gold brooch at my waist for fun.

Style tip: Use accessories to bridge the gap—if your top is a bold contrast, you might feel more comfortable with neutral accessories or sticking to metallics.

5. Jodie-Mixing Another Print

For my print lovers, let’s take things up a notch—why not mix prints? A classic way to do this is with stripes, polka dots, or even gingham.

Details:
-I have worn this top with print shorts in the past and with camo once too. You can see how the top has a peplum ruffle hem, but I just tucked that in, because I am the boss of my clothes. Remember, just because the detail is there doesn’t mean you have to show it off.
-Since I have pink gingham shoes, I figured I’d go bold and wear them.

Style tip: You can think about accessorizing with a mixed print outfit in two ways-
-Keep them minimal so the clothing items stand out.
-Add lots of accessories and have fun since the outfit is unique.

Recap: 5 Ways to Wear a Printed Skirt

  1. Neutral in the print (Charlotte’s white top) Safe, classic, and polished.
  2. Color in the print (Lesley’s yellow top) Easy coordination that feels effortless.
  3. Neutral NOT in the print (Jodie’s grey top) A neutral that lets the skirt shine.
  4. Color NOT in the print (Jodie’s red mesh top) A bold contrast that’s fun and eye-catching.
  5. Mixing another print (Jodie’s pink gingham top) A daring, fashion-forward choice.

No matter how you style it, a printed skirt is one of the most versatile pieces you can own. The key is to have fun, experiment with different pairings, and embrace the joy of fashion!
