At 62 progress in the gym can take time

Lately I’ve been feeling frustrated that getting from 3 to 5 unassisted pull-ups is taking longer than I expected. When you’re putting in the work consistently, it’s easy to want the next step to happen faster.

Then my 22-year-old reminded me that just one year ago, I was working toward my very first pull-up ever.

It also helps to remember that I didn’t even start from a neutral place. I was coming off a rotator cuff injury that took a long time to fully recover from, and later had to dial things back again when I developed lifter’s elbow after probably doing too much overhead lifting in Body Pump.

I’ve been active since I was very young, and I know progress is rarely linear. Some things click quickly, others take longer, and at 62, I sometimes need to remind myself of that again.

If this is you, too, don’t fret. It’s normal to feel impatient sometimes. What matters is that we keep showing up and keep giving ourselves the chance to improve.

Últimamente me he sentido un poco frustrada porque pasar de 3 a 5 dominadas sin asistencia me está costando más de lo que esperaba. Cuando entrenas de forma constante, es fácil querer que el siguiente paso llegue más rápido.

Entonces mi hijo de 22 años me recordó que hace solo un año estaba trabajando para lograr mi primera dominada de la vida.

También ayuda recordar que no partía de cero. Venía de una lesión del manguito rotador que tardó mucho tiempo en recuperarse del todo, y más tarde tuve que volver a bajar la intensidad cuando desarrollé codo de levantador, probablemente por levantar demasiado peso por encima de la cabeza en clases de Body Pump.

He sido activa desde muy joven y sé que el progreso rara vez es lineal. Hay cosas que salen rápido y otras que requieren más paciencia, y a los 62 a veces necesito recordármelo otra vez.

Si te pasa algo parecido, no te preocupes. Es normal sentir cierta impaciencia a veces. Lo importante es seguir presentándonos y darnos la oportunidad de mejorar.
