Welcome to the Podcast Swamp! We have officially hit Peak Audio. Remember when starting a podcast required a microphone, a concept, and something resembling a unique perspective? Those days are gone. Today, all you need is a working vocal cord, an internet connection, and the unwavering confidence that the world desperately needs your hot take on pretty much anything, and hopefully not a product pitch.
If you log onto any Streaming platform right now, you aren’t looking at a directory; you’re looking at what they’re calling: The Podcast Deluge. A literal tidal wave of digital noise where almost a million new shows drop every minute. And that may or may not be factual! Welcome to Podcasts!
If you wade into “This Sauce of Endless Podcasts,” you will quickly realize that the genres have devolved from “True Crime” and “Comedy” into hyper-specific rabbit holes of madness. Here is just a small sample of what you are competing with for earshare:
Perhaps the most terrifying evolution of the podcast boom is the rise of Meta-Podcasting. We now have people hosting podcasts discussing other podcasts. But it doesn’t stop there. There are now podcasts discussing the podcasts that discuss podcasts. It is an audio inception loop so deep that if you scream into the void, three separate guys named Chad will clip it, add a lo-fi beat, and upload it as an “exclusive bonus interview.” What the blank?
If you are a potential listener trying to break through the surface of this algorithmic soup just to find something to listen to while you do the dishes, godspeed. You are currently drowning in a sea of blue-light filters and foam pop-filters.
My advice? Throw your phone in the ocean. Or better yet, start a podcast about how hard it is to find a good podcast. I hear that niche is wide open. Oh yeah, check out my podcast, The Old and in the Way Podcast! It’s killer, you’ll Love it!
