Rebroadcast: NJ, Healing through Music + The Role of Alignment in Health

  1. Rebroadcast: NJ, Healing through Music + The Role of Alignment in Health Kate Cherichello 55:38

What’s ‘good’ in NJ?!

Helping the brain through music and community, then diving into the alignment issues that might be causing you pain.

If you’ve been tuning in to these last few episodes, you know we are currently rebroadcasting a few episodes in between seasons. And we are currently revisiting a few episodes featuring residents of New Jersey, as the upcoming ‘mini season’ of Be The Good with Kate will be highlighting people doing good in my new/old state of NJ!

I (Kate) am an NJ native but was living in Midtown Manhattan for well over a decade until just a few months ago. As I rediscover my home state, I wanted to bring on some guests doing good here. But just like in prior seasons, when you heard from people from Bali to India and Florida to Utah, you certainly don’t need to be in this state to be inspired to start, restart, or continue your journey to finding your passions and helping others along the way.

Today you hear two episodes from prior seasons that happen to feature NJ residents:

Dr. Gillian Velmer (Ep. 43) and Heidi Saldana (Ep. 15).

Gillian Velmer is the founder and director of Sing Aphasia. Aphasia is a language disorder that can occur after a brain injury, often Stroke. Gillian, a speech language pathologist, saw how music so positively affects patients with aphasia and is now bringing together people dealing with communication disorders through music and community.

Gillian tells us how people often have trouble with speaking and writing when they have aphasia, but their intelligence is still just as strong as it once was. It is a devastating diagnosis, as so much of our lives revolve around how we communicate.

How incredible is the power of music: We often hear about left vs right sides of the brain, but music actually is found across the brain. When people engage in music in some way, it lights up the brain. Listen as Gillian tells us more about the benefits!

Heidi’s episode happened so long ago, this podcast was even called by a different name! But her mission remains: Heidi is an Egoscue Method Certified Postural Alignment Specialist who works with dancers as well as others who are in pain. She explains she now understands “how resilient the body is and that when it is breaking down and there is pain or you are getting injured, that there’s a reason, and there’s also a way to walk it back– get the body back to the alignment it’s meant to be in– which allows it to be strong and allows it to take all that we ask of it”. Finding the root, then finding where the body deviated, and addressing from there.

Heidi notes she has learned, “You aren’t what you do, you are who you are.”  Let’s get that body in alignment so it can work to help you capitalize on being the most YOU you can be.

Season 8 will be coming out in the upcoming months. Follow on your favorite podcast platform or sign up at katecherichello.com/bethegood to be alerted to new episodes.
