Winston-Salem used to be two separate cities: Moravian Salem, founded in 1766, and Winston, founded in 1849.

In 1913, they officially became one city, though people often just call it Winston. If you plan to visit, getting there is easy if you have a car. Tobacco companies such as Pleasant Hanes and RJ Reynolds set up shop in the late 1800s, and they’re still big there today. These companies, along with textiles, really shaped Winston-Salem.

When is the Best Time to Visit Winston-Salem

The best times to go to Winston-Salem are in Spring and Summer when the weather is nice. June, July, and August are the busiest months, with many things to do.

But even in winter, there are warm days, and some people like to Travel during the off-season when it’s not as crowded. Fall is cool, too! Sometimes, it’s still warm, in the 80s. Hotels are cheaper, and fewer people from outside visit. No matter where you go, there are plenty of things to do in Winston-Salem every season!

1. Visit Old Salem Museums and Gardens

 Location: 900 Old Salem Rd, Winston-Salem, NC 27101

Hours: Wed-Sat: 10 am – 4 pm, Sun – Tue: Closed

Old Salem Museums and Gardens is a must-see attraction in Winston-Salem and should be one of your first stops! It’s like stepping back in time. Here, you’ll see how people lived in a Moravian community in the 1800s. There are many cool things, like 20 original buildings, living history museums, houses, shops, and bakeries. 

Walking around Old Salem is free. But you must pay if you want to see special things like the art galleries or The Doctor’s House. A ticket is also required for the Boys’ School, the Miksch House and Garden, the Moravian Church, and the Potter’s Workshop. The good news is that you can see all this with an All-In-One Ticket. You can buy tickets at the Visitors Center.

In this living museum, you’ll see cobblers making shoes, sisters dyeing yarn for weaving, and artisans shaping clay. The gardens are lovely for a walk. Don’t miss the Old Salem Bakery – – they make and sell yummy freshly baked bread!

2. Explore Winston Cup Museum and Special Event Center

Location: 1355 N Martin Luther King Jr Dr, Winston-Salem, NC 27101

Hours: Thursday – Saturday: 10:00 am – 5:00 pm.

Admission Fee: For adults: $12, for children $8 (ages 6-12), and children under five are free.

If you’re a fan of NASCAR, go to the Winston Cup Museum & Special Event Center in Winston-Salem! Here, you can experience the exciting era of Winston-Cup NASCAR racing. The museum holds 33 years of Winston Cup records, from championship memories to racing memorabilia. You’ll even see real race cars from that era and racing arcade games celebrating the legendary Winston Cup Series.

You can reserve outdoor and indoor areas at the museum for special events such as weddings or birthday parties. They provide event packages for all occasions. It’s where NASCAR fans can have a great time and make special memories.

3. Join Winston-Salem Ghost Tour

This candlelight tour lasts approximately 90 minutes and includes a walk through the historic West End district. 4. Visit the Shell Station

Location: 1111 E Sprague St, Winston-Salem, NC 27107 

Head to the southern end of the city, and you’ll spot the country’s last big yellow clamshell Shell Oil station. It’s bright yellow with red trim and shaped like a scallop shell. Eight stations were built in the 1930s to promote the Shell brand, and the one at East Sprague Street and Peachtree Street is the only one left.

Even though the Shell station no longer sells gas, it is a memorial to its history. Inside, there are pictures and posts about when it was built, as well as other interesting Shell information. It’s a great spot for taking selfies and a quick trip back in time. 

5. Shop Along Trade Street
