These are such stressful times.  Climate change, politics, social media, inflation, and deadly viruses are all blowing up the status quo.  How are we reacting?  Have we the resilience to push through and release the chronic Stress we have been living under?   As it turns out, our miraculous brain produces a neurotransmitter – GABA (Gamma-aminobutyric acid) that inhibits or slows the brain’s functions.  Its primary function is to reduce the activity of neurons in the brain and the central nervous system.  That, in turn, has a broad range effect on the body and the mind, including i…

It can be such a conversation starter – “I feel like I never sleep anymore!  It is exhausting!”  Usually that statement is met with nods of agreement if your friends are over a certain age.  Is it age itself that interferes with a full night’s sleep? There are age-related problems when you are trying to get a good night’s sleep. What body and brain systems are compromised because of a lack of sleep?  Sleep loss or chronic sleep disruption have many negative consequences, including adverse effects on metabolism and immune function.  The most obvious of these adverse effects are o…

In 2006 I discovered how we can maintain an aging brain.  To understand how to reverse aging changes, It was necessary to understand how our brain ages and what brain functions were affected.  I was in my fifties when I started this career path. Throughout the years my perspective on the aging brain was evolving.  In my fifties my knowledge of what was going on with my brain was basic.  It was still an academic approach to changing my brain, more so than experience.  My enthusiasm to learn more drove me to seek out teachers and mentors.  Brain health was focused on preventing dementia…

There is a right-of-passage as we enter our older years that can be very disconcerting.  Suddenly we realize that no one is speaking to us – as older women.  Marketing of products leaves us out in the cold.  We don’t see ourselves anymore.  The prime demographic I learned, capped out at 54!  How can a large generation of women be completely lost in the market?  How do we, or can we, wrap our heads around this external mindset of our age and value?   Seven out of 10 (70%) of women believe they become invisible as they get older.  The frightening part of this statistic is that they f…

“The two most important days in your life are the day you are born and the day you find out why.”  Mark Twain   Let’s go for the big idea and talk about your life purpose.  Do you have any idea as to what makes you excited to get out of bed in the morning and joyfully start your day?  Is there something you are passionate about?  The benefits of life purpose are BIG!  It is a “key component of psychological well-being, finding meaning in what you do and who you are and leading a goal-directed life” (Mercola, 2015).      Recognizing Passion and Purpose Recognizing your passi…

Thanksgiving is this week.  Those of us in the US set aside a day to express gratitude for all that life brings us.  How can you find that ‘attitude of gratitude’ if everything around you sucks?  Everything is easier if you are in the ‘flow’ of life.  It is something we all want.  But life is also about learning and experiencing and there will be times when nothing seems to be working.  Even in good times – our brain is always looking for something that will be a threat to us – and that keeps us on the negative side of things.  Let’s look at our brain and gratitude.   The…

We have been dog owners for a long time.  The house seems too quiet and clean when there isn’t a dog around.   And we miss the affectionate greetings every time we come through the front door.  Dogs are unconditional love.   What happens to us when we create such tight bonds with our dogs?  How does an animal become a family member?   There has been some research on this very topic – no doubt from a dog owner.  As it turns out, our canine friends can produce oxytocin (a neurochemical responsible for the bonding between a mother and baby).  The release of oxytocin creates a str…

In November of 2021, I wrote a blog – Does Anger Define Americans Today?  I wanted to elaborate on some of the findings in that blog because America is certainly going through a very stressful and fearful time.  When I write a blog, I research current articles to support whatever I am writing about.  My keywords for this search were – “level of anger in America”.  I received 47,600,000 results!  America – I think we have a problem!   It is hard not to notice that Americans are operating on their last nerve.  Tempers are short, rudeness prevails, and anger is rampant.  There i…

This election season has been brutal.  My brain is overwhelmed and now fried in response to the intensity of the political advertisements on TV.  The mute button on my remote is showing signs of wear and tear!  As it turns out, our politics may be shaped by our brains.  Using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), neuroscientists have found specific differences between conservative and liberal brains.  This compilation of studies reveals the inside workings of our brains and politics.      The Voting Brain In the past decade, neuroscience has enabled us to identify the parts of …

A couple of weeks ago I recorded a podcast with Dr. Krystal Culler of the Virtual Brain Health Center.  She chose the topic of Aromatherapy and the Brain, so I dusted off my aromatherapy research and had a blast talking to her about it.  Because aromatherapy is considered complementary Alternative Medicine (CAM) I did some searching to find out if there was solid research to support the benefits of essential oils.I have been a certified clinical aromatherapist since 2001.  Aromatherapy wasn’t viewed as a therapeutic modality then.  Even now, there are still questions about the effectiv…
