Are you looking for new breakfast ideas this year? Look no further! Here is a nourishing dish to start your day and honor Surya. Surya is one of the names for the sun in Sanskrit. The sun is revered in Ayurveda and Yoga as the provider of warmth, light, energy, and the source of all life.

Pause for a moment in gratitude for the giver of life before you enjoy this meal. Consider the sun and how it is perfectly positioned to support life on Earth. It’s not too close, and not too far away, and it remains faithfully in orbit at just the right angle. It is one of the only constants and absolute reference points that we can rely on. By aligning our days with the rhythm of the sun, we can maintain optimal health.

Pearl barley is a pitta and kapha-friendly grain that offers an alternative to oats. Combined with rice and this balanced spice blend, Surya Sunrise Porridge is delicious, satisfying, and medicinal.

Measure the turmeric carefully. In small amounts, turmeric is anti-inflammatory, but larger quantities can aggravate pitta and vata dosha. Follow the recipe, not the trends, more is not better in Ayurveda!

If you are familiar with our balance bowl approach, this dish is both augmenting and extractive.

SERVES: 2

PREPARATION TIME: 20-35 minutes

YOU’LL NEED:

1 Tbsp ghee

½ tsp mineral salt

½ tsp chopped fresh turmeric or ¼ – ½ tsp ground turmeric powder

½ tsp coriander powder

½ tsp fennel powder

4 large walnuts chopped

ÂĽ cup white jasmine rice

ÂĽ cup pearl barley

2-3 cups water

1-2 tsp honey

HERE’S HOW:

Heat the ghee in a small pot and simmer the salt, turmeric, coriander, and fennel until the aroma is present.

Add the rice, barley, and walnuts and simmer gently.

Add the water, stir, cover, and cook with the lid on for around 35 minutes.

Turn off the heat, stir, and let sit for 5 minutes.

Add the honey after serving, so that the porridge isn’t too hot when the honey is added.

TIPS & SUBSTITUTIONS:

If using a pressure cooker, the cooking time will reduce to about 18-20 minutes.

Herbal tea such as mint or rooibos can be substituted for water for an interesting addition.

Decrease or increase the water quantity depending on your desired consistency.
