Winter Hats Style: How To Stay Warm & Chic

When the cold weather rolls in, thinking about winter hat style is more than just practical —it’s an opportunity to add personality and polish to your outfit. Since this is the Thrifty 6 group, we are also having fun with preloved versions.

Quote of the day: “Don’t change your goal, change your strategy.” Unknown

I hear women comment that hats don’t look good on them, and I’ve devised a theory to disprove that. There is no “right” shape of head/face for hats nor are all hats created equal.

The biggest point is to start wearing them and take photos of yourself.

Part of my theory is that we aren’t used to seeing ourselves in hats, so when we do wear them, they look “funny”. While it’s not really funny, it’s just different and not the usual.

Insider tip: One of the best ways to ease yourself into wearing hats is to thrift them or try on friends’ hats. This way, you won’t spend a lot of Money.

The 3 of us are showcasing 3 types of winter hat styles: the turban, the felt hat, and the classic beanie. Each offers its own unique vibe, so you can mix and match depending on your mood, outfit, or occasion. And the best part is they were all great deals.

As much as I love my site, Jodie’s Touch of Style, I really enjoy putting together my daily emails. I consider my emails an extension of my blog that is chocked full of positive inspiration that one friend calls a “Variety Show.”
I include articles, videos, and posts that strike my fancy and since I have no siblings to share with, I share with you.

1. Lesley-Turban Style Hats

Turban-style hats are the epitome of sophistication. They’re perfect for those who love a vintage-inspired look or want to elevate a casual winter outfit with a touch of drama (that’s Lesley in a nutshell). This style is not only chic but also protective, keeping your head warm and your hair neat.

Why It Works: Turban-style hats are versatile enough to go from casual to glamorous. Their structured yet soft silhouette frames the face beautifully, making them a standout accessory that’s both functional and fashionable.
They are also more unique than other winter hat styles.

Details:
1-Lesley joked how the pin holding her scarf together to make it cape-like was part of the family jewels being that she said we should call her Princess Anastasia this day.
2-The decorations on the sides of her boots are original to the boots. However, just like in my idea of DIY your boots, you could add your own.

Insider tip: While these types of fur-trimmed turbans aren’t easy to find at most Retail stores, it’s a great reason to snag one if you see something like it at the secondhand store.
They are truly warm and yet super chic.

2. Charlotte-Felt Hats

Felt hats are a classic winter staple that never goes out of style. Whether a wide-brimmed fedora or a chic cloche, a felt hat can add an instant dose of sophistication to any outfit.

Why It Works: Felt hats are a great way to elevate even the simplest outfits. They’re structured enough to make a statement but soft enough to feel cozy and approachable. Plus, they’re an excellent option for those looking to shield their face from the wind and snow in style.

Insider tip: If you are feeling blah, a felt hat in a color that compliments your complexion is the recipe for success. This rust-brown one gives a boost of color to my mom with her white hair.

Details:
1-These faux leather pants are super sexy on women of any age. My mom wore them in the warmer weather with red booties.
2- Her jacket is reversible. A perfect type of traveling jacket.
3-Even though the tan purse has an open weave on the front-it is not just for summer. I love how it mirrors the print of the jacket from far away.

Insider tip: These hats aren’t all created equal. The width of the brim, the shape of the crown, as well as the height of the crown, all make a difference in how they look and feel on you.
That’s why you should never say “They don’t look good on me” before trying on a bunch of different varieties.

3. Jodie-Beanies For Winter Hats Style

Beanies are the ultimate winter accessory for staying warm while maintaining a laid-back, trendy vibe. From slouchy styles to snug knits, there’s a beanie for everyone.

I thought the double pom pom made for a fun option. It’s a good thing not to take ourselves too seriously, especially in our winter hat styles.

Why It Works: Beanies are a go-to for their practicality and versatility. They’re easy to throw on, come in countless colors and styles, and pair well with everything from sporty looks to edgy ensembles. Plus, they’re perfect for bad hair days—what’s not to love?

Insider tip: If you do want to remove the beanie and not have flattened hair, there are 2 options. Buy a bigger beanie (try the men’s ones) or get a silk-lined one.

Details:
1-I love the idea of making this leopard coat into a “top” by wearing a normal belt over it. Granted the belt kept moving around didn’t, so in the future, I would place a couple of pieces of fashion tape on the inside of the belt to hold onto the coat.
2- I Found this belt at Goodwill and used my handy dandy hole puncher to add another hole to it.
3-The cuffed jeans were purchased at Goodwill as normal jeans (albeit too long) and then cuffed. I did tack them in place with a couple of pass-throughs with a needle and thread.
4-I have worn this coat oodles in the past. The original crew all had a version to showcase.

Insider tip: I like a pom pom to add a whimsical vibe to a beanie, but there are some with removable pom poms OR you can just cut it off.

Final Thoughts

Winter hats style is more than just a way to stay warm; it’s an essential part of your cold-weather wardrobe. Whether you prefer the elegance of a turban, the timeless charm of a felt hat, or the cozy ease of a beanie, there’s a style to suit every outfit and occasion.

Winter Hats Style: How To Stay Warm &Amp; Chic &Raquo; All

Thrifty 6

With the fashion and textile industry being a major contributor to landfills and other environmental pollution, we decided to make it the mission of this little group to focus on second-hand items.

Since the prompt for this month was winter hats style, there should be a large variety of options to enjoy below.

Insider tip: If there aren’t many wonderful secondhand shops near you, then I included a list of online shops that I love at the end of this post.

Check out the other members of the Thrifty 6 group for all kinds of ideas about winter hats style.

Shelbee of Shelbee on the Edge

“My love for hats runs deep. It all began when I discovered my grandmother’s collection of 1950s/1960s hats in her attic when I was a teenager. I have been obsessed ever since and have curated my own very extensive hat collection over the years. However, hats are not something I generally look for in secondhand shops because it grosses me out. I will consider a preloved hat as long as I can properly and easily clean it before placing it on my own head. Like this cute knit hat I found in my local consignment shop about 6 or 7 years ago. It came with the matching arm warmers as well. Everything in my outfit is preloved except for my leggings, tee shirt, boots, and necklace.”

Nancy of Nancy’s Fashion Style

“There are a few things I will definitely not wear pre loved, like underwear and shoes. And hats are one of those too, because I never wear hats, at all! Not even when it is freezing. I have thick hair, lol.
But Gerben always wears hats, and caps! So I had a choice of many actually. And he didn’t buy them pre loved, but I nicked it from him so for me it is pre loved! Yeah, a girl has to be creative sometimes. Perfect with a feminine look for some cool contrast! I do wear his caps in summer when I am reading a book in the garden though.”

Emma of Style Splash

“I bought this vintage green hat on eBay years ago. Often, vintage hats are too small for me, but this one fits perfectly. I’ve matched it to my Fenella Smith vegan leather bag to contrast against the cosy yellow faux fur coat by Jayley that was a more recent eBay purchase.”

Jane of Preloved-Vintage-Handmade

“Yippee! – the T6 theme for January is hats…
A perfect opportunity to rock this authentic cowboy hat which I added to my already extensive hat collection last summer.
I’m often seen in a cap or a beret or a beanie but a cowboy hat is a huge statement even for me – I look like the baddie in a spaghetti western!
In this slightly sinister full-length coat, all I need is a cheroot dangling from my lips and I’m Clint Eastwood!”

Winter Hats Style: How To Stay Warm &Amp; Chic &Raquo; T6 Hats Sally

Sally of Within a World of My Own

“When I was young, I had a small vintage hat collection, but these days my only second-hand hat is a dark stocking cap that my husband and I picked up along the way.  (Can you ever have too many stocking caps?  Maybe, but not in my personal experience.)  I have transformed my work-from-home outfit into a “heading outside onto the balcony in Minnesota winter” look by adding the hat and a wool Wolfstaedter loden cape that I purchased at Goodwill for next to nothing in the early 90s (and it was already decades old by the time I got it).  The quality of this coat is almost unfathomable by 2025 standards.”

Online Thrift Stores

If you don’t have great secondhand stores near you, then another great option is online thrifting. These are the ones I’ve used more than once (except Swap, but it comes highly recommended by a friend)
