Popular Textures In Knitting With Lion Brand Yarns

Sponsored by Lion Brand Yarns & Shareasale

If there’s one thing I adore, it’s textures in knitting. In fact, back in the days when I couldn’t Sleep, I would go down to the basement to spend time picking up and caressing my yarns. The textures and sensory input would soothe my soul.

Quote of the day: “Inspiration comes on the twenty-fifth attempt, not the first. If you want to make something excellent, don’t wait for a brilliant idea to strike. Create twenty-five of what you need and one will be great. James Clear

While I may not be a knitting blogger, I have often shared my love of knitting. Knitting was once my creative hobby while I worked in a professional career.

Imagine my surprise and delight when the opportunity arose to work with Lion Brand Yarns to introduce two of their newest yarns that are all about textures in knitting. This fall Lion Brand Yarns has introduced Shaggy Chic and Faux Leather yarns!
These two yarns couldn’t be more different from each other, but together, they’re about to give you textures in knitting like you couldn’t imagine.

When I first started knitting, Lion Brand Yarns was the site I would explore to find free knitting patterns. Because of this, I have also included a couple of great patterns for these 2 yarns.

Let’s dive into the details of these stylish new yarns and figure out how you can work them into your wardrobe, accessories, and home decor!

Why Textures in Knitting?

Colder weather always seems like the time to embrace coziness and textures in knitting. These two yarns give you all the tools to do just that.
But don’t limit yourself to knitting. These can be fabulous for crocheting or crafting too.

We use textures in our outfits to create more depth instead of just relying on color and shape. And that’s the same with textures in knitting.

Here are just two of the reasons that this type of crafting can be good for you.

Textures In Knitting With Lion Brand Yarn

Lion Brands Shaggy Chic Yarn

If you’re a fan of textures in knitting, Shaggy Chic is going to be your best friend. It’s soft, fuzzy, and has that teddy bear vibe that instantly makes you want to snuggle up with it.

Insider tip: Just like I talked about in the fall trends report, faux fur is still going strong. Don’t worry about looking bulky in it. Embrace the warmth and fun.

It comes in 12 different colors, and the brand sent me 1 skein each of the Snow, Hot Pink, and Blueberry.

Shaggy Chic adds instant volume and texture to your projects. You might originally think that this shaggy texture would be hard to work with.
But it’s not. It’s very stretchy and because it’s chunky, it knits up fast!

Insider tip: The fluff hides any imperfections which is a plus. The drawback of the fluff is you don’t want to have to rip it out. You shouldn’t need to rip out though because no one will see any mistakes.

Project Ideas for Shaggy Chic:
  1. Cozy Cardigans and Sweaters: Shaggy Chic is practically begging to be made into something you can wear when the weather cools off. The texture lends itself beautifully to oversized cardigans or a simple, snuggly pullover. Trust me, you’ll feel like you’re wrapped in a cloud!
  2. Pillows: Here’s a way to update your home decor for fall. Shaggy Chic is ideal for making throw pillows with textures in knitting abounding. Not only do they add a bit of whimsy to your space, but they’re also incredibly soft to the touch—perfect for lazy Sundays on the couch.
  3. Accessories: A Shaggy Chic beanie or scarf will not only keep you warm but also add a fun flair to your cold-weather outfit. The fluffy texture creates a whimsical, playful look that’s still totally wearable.

Insider Tip: Because of its volume, Shaggy Chic works best with larger needles or hooks (I’m talking size 10mm or bigger). This will help you avoid losing your stitches in the fluff and create that beautiful, lofty texture we all love.

Patterns perfect for Textures in Knitting with Shaggy Chic

I’ve rounded up a bunch of patterns on Lion Brand’s site that would work with this yarn. BTW, you can download the pattern for free. The site also shows if you want to purchase the kit that comes with the yarn.

Textures in Knitting: Lion Brand’s Faux Leather Yarn

Now, for those of you who love a bit of edginess in your projects, Faux Leather yarn is a game-changer. When I say I was surprised by how realistic this yarn looks, I mean it! Faux Leather gives you all the visual appeal of leather with none of the maintenance.

This yarn comes in 12 different colors and the brand sent me New York White, Caribbean Blue, and Purple Rain.

So, how does it feel to work with? The texture is smooth, with a slight firmness that helps create structured shapes, but it’s also flexible enough to be worked into accessories and embellishments. Unlike actual leather, you can work with Faux Leather yarn using standard knitting needles or crochet hooks—no need for specialized tools!

Project Ideas for Faux Leather Yarn:
  1. Statement Handbags: Faux Leather is ideal for crafting lots of different kinds of purses. Whether you want to make a sleek clutch, a crossbody bag, or even a small backpack, this yarn will give you that leather look.
  2. Belts & Straps: Create your own belts and bag straps that look like they came straight off a runway. Faux Leather’s durability and sleek appearance make it perfect for these types of accessories. Plus, you can customize the length and width to your heart’s content.
  3. Jacket Embellishments: Want to add some flair to a handmade jacket or cardigan? Use Faux Leather yarn to craft embellishments like buckles, buttons, or even decorative panels. The yarn adds structure and a high-fashion feel that will elevate any outerwear piece.
  4. Bold Jewelry: This might be one of my favorite uses for Faux Leather yarn—jewelry! Think chunky necklaces, statement bracelets, or even a sleek choker. It’s a unique way to incorporate the faux leather trend into your wardrobe without going over the top.

Insider Tip: Since Faux Leather yarn has a smoother surface and doesn’t stretch as much as traditional yarns, you’ll want to use slightly larger needles or hooks than you normally would for similar-weight yarns.
BTW, this yarn is very easy to rip out if you need to start over. Ask me how I know.

Bringing Them Together: Mixed Textures in Knitting

Now, if you really want to take things up a notch, here’s a little styling tip for you: try mixing Shaggy Chic and Faux Leather together in one project! The contrast between the fluffy, soft texture of Shaggy Chic and the sleek, polished look of Faux Leather is truly magical. It would be the perfect yin/yang that I’m always talking about.

Think about it—how amazing would a tote bag be with a Faux Leather base and Shaggy Chic trim? Or a boho vest with a Faux Leather belt tie?
