How To Wear A Tulle Skirt For Older Women
A tulle skirt might make you think of ballerinas or fancy evening gowns, but trust me—it’s way more versatile than you’d expect! Mixing this whimsical, floaty fabric with a structured jacket or blazer creates a look that’s both sophisticated and edgy. And the best part? There are so many ways to wear a tulle skirt and incorporate it with the items you already have in your closet.
Quote of the day: “The more an idea is tied to your identity, the more you will ignore evidence that it is false. People seem to have no trouble finding reasons to ignore the merits of ideas they dislike.
To continue to grow and learn, you must be willing to update, expand, and edit your identity. In many ways, Growth is unlearning.” James Clear
This idea started when I saw this Pin on Pinterest. It’s the perfect example of dichotomy in an outfit and I had to recreate it as well as find other ideas for how to wear a tulle skirt.
I thought it would be fun to reproduce this look and find other toppers that would add to the idea of how to wear a tulle skirt.
Once I finally added a tulle skirt to my closet years ago, I’ve found many ways to wear it as you can see in other articles.
How to Choose the Right Tulle Skirt & Why
I know I won’t convince everyone they need a tulle skirt. Once we hit the age of 40, we think that skirts like these are too girly, young, and not appropriate.
However, I think they are more versatile than you think as proven by this list:
- Upcoming wedding guest outfit
- Any glam event
- Brunch with friends
- Cruise outfit for the fancy evening
- Heck, don’t forget Halloween
Insider tip: Okay, so you wouldn’t wear them to work, yet since most of us older women are retired, that’s exactly why your closet needs one.
Not all tulle skirts are created equal! Here are some things to keep in mind when picking one that works best for you:
- Length: Midi or knee-length tulle skirts tend to be the most versatile, but if you’re aiming for drama, a floor-length option can be stunning, especially with a shorter jacket.
- Layers: If you want a more subtle look, go for a tulle skirt with fewer layers for a softer silhouette. If you want the full princess effect, go all in with a multi-layered tulle skirt!
- Color: Neutrals like black, white, cream, and blush are the easiest to style, but don’t be afraid to try a rich jewel tone if you’re looking for something bolder.
Insider tip: While you may not find tulle skirts at Old Navy or Chicos, you will find them online in my widget. Either that or reach out to Just Be Youtiful who usually has one or two in stock.
1. The Belted Blazer
Inspired by the Pinterest image, I thought this idea of how to wear a tulle skirt would be something older women could imagine.
Not only does this define your shape, but it also adds a polished touch to an otherwise dreamy look. The juxtaposition of a structured blazer with the soft, voluminous tulle creates a high-fashion contrast that feels like it could walk straight off the runway.
Looking in my closet, I pulled out this bronze tulle skirt and paired it with a long black blazer handed down to me by my bestie.
I belted it with a leopard stretchy belt that you can find for a deal at Valerie’s Avenue (make sure you use my discount code, JODIE15).
Since the inspiration photo of how to wear a tulle skirt had boots with it, I wore my bronze boots. My mom made this print bow tie blouse years ago (seen here) and it was perfect with the ensemble.
Insider Color Tip: If your tulle skirt is neutral (like cream, blush, or even olive green as in the photo), go for a blazer in complementary earthy tones. This is a good baby step to create a cohesive, balanced look that’s easy on the eyes yet undeniably stylish.
2. Unbelted Blazer
For a more laid-back vibe, skip the belt and let the blazer fall naturally. This approach is perfect if you’re going for a slightly undone, relaxed look. When you wear the blazer unbelted, you let the natural volume of the tulle skirt take center stage, giving it that dreamy, almost whimsical appeal yet you still have a structure with a blazer.
I thought I would showcase two options on how to wear a tulle skirt with an unbelted blazer. I have the blazer buttoned in one option and opened in the other. I wore the same pink tulle skirt with both options yet each outfit has a unique vibe.
Insider Tip: Worried about what shoes to incorporate with your tulle skirt? I am showing a huge variety in these photos from heels to sneakers to different kinds of boots.
3. How to Wear a Tulle Skirt with a Long Cardigan
A long cardigan and a tulle skirt may sound like an unlikely pairing, but this combo is surprisingly chic. The soft lines of a long cardigan add a cozy, effortless feel to the ensemble. Think of it as the perfect transitional look—great for those in-between weather days when you want to feel warm without sacrificing style.
You might think that because the tulle skirt is so voluminous, you couldn’t wear a long cardigan. Yet a cardigan that is more open can still show off the tulle skirt and not be overwhelming.
For this look, the combat boots have become the yin/yang piece to counteract the femininity of the outfit.
Insider Tip: You can copy any of these jacket/blazer looks with your cardigans. Try belting a thigh-length one, or keep a hip-length cardigan open.
4. Faux Fur Jacket
When the weather gets colder, a faux fur jacket is the perfect addition to your tulle skirt outfit. The luxurious texture of the fur pairs beautifully with the airy quality of the tulle, giving you a look that’s as glamorous as it is edgy. This combo is ideal for a night out or a special event where you want to make a statement.
Insider Tip: Don’t think you can only wear an outfit like this for a special event. Switch out the turtleneck with a hoodie sweatshirt or graphic tee to make it a wonderful errand outfit.
With this example of what to wear with a tulle skirt, I made sure to include a cropped jacket so you could compare the different lengths in this article.
Remember, your eye will tell you what you like better BUT don’t discount any of the options. Try something on and take a selfie of you wearing it before you give it a yay or nay.

Final Thoughts: Embrace the Unexpected
Pairing a tulle skirt with a blazer, jacket, or cardigan is about embracing the unexpected. This combination allows you to play with different styles—whether you’re going for romantic, edgy, cozy, or glam. The key is to balance the feminine flow of the tulle with more structured or cozy elements to create a look that feels sophisticated and intentional.
Fashion is all about mixing things up and making each outfit feel like an expression of your personality. So, don’t be afraid to experiment with different jacket styles, color combinations, and footwear. Each variation adds a unique twist to the ensemble, proving that a tulle skirt can be much more than a one-trick piece in your wardrobe.
