How To Wear A Boilersuit 3 Ways

If you’ve ever dismissed the idea of how to wear a boilersuit, thinking it’s too boxy or unflattering, then I’m here to change your mind!
Granted this wasn’t on my radar until I was shopping with my friend, Cheryl, who was wearing one. It looked so chic and then I stumbled upon one at the thrift store.

Quote of the day: “Beware the student of one teacher. A good idea spirals into dogma when it gets applied to everything and stretched beyond the areas where it is useful. Remain open and embrace a lot of teachers.” James Clear

This one-piece wonder isn’t just for mechanics or jumpsuit lovers—it’s a versatile staple that can be dressed up, worn casually, or styled for running errands with ease. The trick? It’s all in the details—fabric, fit, and styling choices make all the difference.

Insider tip: The boilersuit is basically a jumpsuit so layering UNDER it makes it much easier to go to the bathroom. Sure, you can add toppers to change up the look also, but today I concentrated on items layered under it.

One advantageous aspect of how to wear a boilersuit is the zipper (or buttons) up the front to make it much easier to get on and off.

Let’s explore the different ways I am showcasing how to wear a boilersuit for different occasions.

What to Look for in a BoilerSuit

Before we talk about my ideas of how to wear a boilersuit, let’s cover the basics. Not all boilersuits are created equal, and finding the right one for your body and personal aesthetic is key.

  • Fabric Matters: If you want a dressier look, opt for silky or structured fabrics like twill or polished denim. For a more relaxed, everyday feel, cotton or linen blends work beautifully.
  • Fit is Everything: A cinched waist or a belted option can create a more defined shape, while a looser, relaxed cut gives off effortlessly cool vibes.
  • Length Considerations: Cropped legs can be fun and modern, while full-length styles can be versatile since you can cuff them.
  • Zippers vs. Buttons: A front-zip style is great for a sleek and minimal look, while buttons add a bit of vintage charm.

While boilersuits were originally made to cover up your outfit while doing dirty work, they have morphed into a cool style. In fact, when I shared this idea on IG (with a different version of the dressy option), I was surprised at the amount of comments.

Insider tip: Put aside the self-belt that comes with any boilersuit or jumpsuit for that matter. Keep them hanging together to use with other outfits, but use other belts to add contrast and fun to your boilersuit outfits.

As much as I love my site, Jodie’s Touch of Style, I really enjoy putting together my daily emails. I consider my emails an extension of my blog that is chocked full of positive inspiration that one friend calls a “Variety Show.”
I include articles, videos, and posts that strike my fancy and since I have no siblings to share with, I share with you.

How to Wear a Boilersuit for a Dressy Look

Yes, you can make a boilersuit look dressy! It’s all about the right accessories and layering.

Key Styling Tips:

  • Heels are Your Best Friend: A pair of pointed-toe pumps, heeled ankle boots, or strappy sandals instantly elevate the look.
  • Belt It Up: Adding a statement belt at the waist helps define your shape and adds a luxe touch.
  • Cuff: Shortening the length of the pants shows off your amazing shoes. Feel free to cuff them even more to bare your ankles.
  • Jewelry is a Game Changer: Bold earrings, layered necklaces, or even a chic brooch can bring some glam to the look.
  • Cuffs: While I didn’t do this here, rolling up your sleeves can use your body as part of the styling.

Example Outfit:

I went with a ton of bling with my statement necklace and metal chain belt.
Other ideas would be to wear a sequin shirt under it, a silk blouse, or even a lace cami/Halftee (use code Jtouch20)

How to Wear a Boilersuit Casually

For an everyday, relaxed look, a boiler suit is one of the easiest outfits you can throw on and still look put together.

Key Styling Tips:

  • Sneakers or Flat Sandals Keep it Laid-Back: Sneakers, espadrilles, or sandals create an effortlessly cool vibe.
  • Layer with a Turtleneck, Sweater or Tee: Layering under the top part with a fitted item adds warmth and interest. Just unzip or unbutton the boilersuit to where it feels right.
  • Cuff the Ankles for a Sporty Look: If your boiler suit is slightly long, rolling the hems gives it a more intentional, relaxed style.

Example Outfit:

This olive green boilersuit was paired with my gold/black sneakers (under $20 and use code COMFY10) and a lightweight, whimsical sweater under it. For the summer replace the sweater with a t-shirt.

How to Wear a Boilersuit Around Town

Whether you’re heading to lunch, running errands, or going to an appointment, a boilersuit can be the ultimate grab-and-go outfit with a little extra finesse.

Key Styling Tips:

  • Comfy Yet Stylish Footwear is Essential: Loafers, ankle boots, or trendy mules make for an easygoing yet elevated touch.
  • Use contrasting colors: Adding contrasting colors with your extras really makes the outfit pop.
  • Layer a Button-Down Under It: For a slightly different approach, wear a fitted button-down under the suit for a more layered effect.

Insider tip: This is a great option for any blouse that seems too tight by itself.

Example Outfit:

Since my boilersuit is olive green, I opted for red pops of color with it. The heart blouse, the ankle boots, as well as my glasses really create a fabulous look.

How to Change Up Your Boilersuit

One of the best things about a boilersuit is its versatility. Here are a few easy ways to switch things up without buying multiple versions:

  • Swap the Belt: Changing out the standard belt is the easiest option. Don’t forget you can use more than just a belt. Try a scarf, a self-belt from a different clothing item, or a ribbon from your wrapping projects.
  • Layer Over/Under It: Treat your boilersuit like pants and layer a sweater, vest, or cropped jacket over it for a completely different silhouette. If you experience multiple bathroom breaks throughout the day, then layer under the top with all kinds of clothing items.
  • Adjust the Fit: Play with how you roll the cuffs or sleeves to create a different vibe each time you wear it.
  • Change the Shoes: A boilersuit paired with sneakers feels relaxed, but swap those out for heels or heeled boots, and suddenly, you’ve got a more refined look.
  • Accessories: Don’t forget that accessories are the cherry on top. Adding brooches, necklaces or scarves can be great options for how to wear a boilersuit.

Final Thoughts on How to Wear a Boilersuit

Even though this wasn’t on my radar originally, I found that I adored these outfits and wanted to create even more.

The boilersuit is truly a chameleon piece—able to shift from dressy to casual to everyday chic with just a few tweaks. Whether you’re belting it and adding heels, layering it with other shirts and sneakers, or adding pops of colors, the possibilities are endless.

What I learned: Staying open to new clothing and styles will keep you feeling and looking fresh.
