How To Style a Crop Top Over 50

If you’re over 50 years old, I’m sure this subject is one that you would not imagine considering. How to style a crop top is something for the young girls, right?
And I understand the years of appropriatism we grew up with would lead you to that conclusion.

However…there are ways you can layer your crop top. Additionally, a mindset shift would behoove all of us.

Quote of the day: “The way to right wrongs is to turn the light of truth upon them.” Ida B. Wells

Personally, I had never (before blogging) shown my midriff in public after I turned 30. I’m sure many of you are the same. Yet, let’s analyze the facts.
-Every woman has a tummy.
-What makes a tummy bad? Who said they should only be flat and firm?
-Why is it that most women believe it’s not appropriate to show a sliver of midriff? This reminds me of when it was taboo to show your ankles.

Once I started questioning my beliefs about showing my midriff and realizing my body was not the enemy (my mindset was), I learned to embrace my flaws, scars, wrinkles, and things that some women in society think they need to cover up.

Granted it didn’t happen overnight, but it’s been the most freeing thing for me these last 10 years. My hope is to get others to believe the same thing.

How to Style a Crop Top

Yet even if you won’t ever in a million years show a sliver of midriff in public, I still have options of how to style a crop top.

And why would you even bother to buy a crop top?
One reason is they are found everywhere now since the fashion silhouette has changed. Since we are seeing wide-leg pants more, the top half is becoming more fitted and shorter.

Another reason is that you don’t have to worry about tucking when you have a shorter shirt. This creates less bulk and no stress.

Yet remember, what is advertised as cropped, doesn’t mean it’s super short on your body. Many times a crop top shown on the model with an inch of skin showing would be a top that comes to the waistband of your jeans.
I’d call that ideal.

Insider tip: I hear you saying that a top like that would ride up and show your skin when you raise your arms. So? Will the police come to arrest you?
In reality, I bet the only person who notices is you. I call it a step in the right direction of embracing your body.

I have showcased other ways how to style a crop top that doesn’t involve showing skin if you want to see more examples.

It’s a fabulous proportion when you combine a shorter top with a longer skirt.

Sure this can be done by tucking in your top, yet there are times you don’t want that bulk.

So instead, wearing a “cropped” top can be an ideal solution.

But what if you don’t have a top that is cropped? There are ways to do this with a longer top.

  • Tuck the end of your shirt under your bra band if it’s long enough.
  • Gather up the extra material and use either a clear elastic or scarf clip to hold the excess fabric. (That’s what Charlotte did as you can see the bit of white material peeking out of the vest edge)
  • If the top is tight enough you can tuck that gathered material up under the top and “hide” it. If you are wearing a vest or topper, it can be hidden on the side or back very easily.

Remembering my 2-word motto for layering is key.

Over & Under.

While my mother layered over her cropped top, I layered under it. You can put a crop top over any longer top or dress.

Insider tip: This is the same concept of making your dress into a skirt that I have discussed for eons. This trick is especially helpful if you have a spaghetti-strap dress and don’t want to wear your strapless bra.

Insider tip: This top is athleisurewear yet why not wear it as a normal top? I’ve worn a sports bra as a top in the past.

Because my clothing items were solid colors, I used prints and multicolored pieces in my accessories.

Tummies Are Not Bad

Cathie-Wear Your Crop Top

Cathie always keeps stylish and wears the modern things. Her attitude is incredibly refreshing and I hope it’s a great inspiration to everyone.

What is most amazing is how she bought this “set” at 2 different places. They are made by the same company but found in separate stores.

Sets like this are a wonderful option because you wear them together for an easy one-and-done outfit. Yet you can split them up and create a multitude of different looks.

Cathie paired white with the green and pink set. White sneakers, white earrings, and a white, vintage purse all create a summery look.
