Hybrid Work and Productivity
To the Hybrid Boomer – I appreciate your support.
Hybrid work is an experience! But what about hybrid work and productivity? Are we more productive on work from home days? A Hybrid work model is a mode of work that supports employees working from wherever they are. It can be a combination of onsite work at a company office or facility and work-from-home or other remote location. With hybrid work employees can switch between the two by working one or more days at either location.Â
Employees argue that they are more productive while working away from the office. The daily commute, interruptions from office chatter, and frequent times away from their workspace for breaks can interfere with productivity. Yet, an article at Envoy.com suggested that 77% of companies offer some type of hybrid work model. This seems to suggest that employers are getting what they need from employees in productivity.Â

The COVID-19 pandemic dictated the way off-site work models were first implemented. We needed to stay home for safety if our work roles allowed it, however long-term work modes had to be defined. Basically, what was thought of as hybrid work was remote work out of necessity. Above all, employees proved that they could and would perform their jobs working away from the office.Â
Productivity Includes Socialization
Now that the world has opened again, employers are making corrections to the hybrid work model and asking employees to get back on campus a few days a week. Two or three days on-site is common, but various models exist depending on the industry and needs of the business. Of course, there are employees who are resisting, but there are valid reasons for hybrid work. Working from home is more intense and focused, therefore employees believe that they can accomplish more by not going into the office at all. With video conferencing meetings can involve attendees from across the globe (getting them to turn on their camera is another story), so is there really a need to get back to conference rooms? But productivity also includes socialization in the form of Relationships and team building, which is difficult to do when you are not in person.Â
Employees should continue to assess their individual work commitments to determine where they are most productive. Measure your own progress. Above all, be honest with yourself about whether you are more productive on work from home days. Hybrid work offers on-site, off-site, or a combination of both. You have the option to choose the location where you can best honor the commitment for what you are being paid to do.Â
