The King Or Queen Of Your Business Empire
Watching the coronation of King Charles III in England, makes me think about how leaders are seen inside of their own companies. England’s Monarchy is a symbol within their county and not really ruling over the country’s policies or government. How does the world see you as the founder or leader of your business/country? Are you a quiet figurehead? Are you the favorite chosen one? Are you a strong leader that truly represents and leads the business and organization? Become the King or Queen of your business and empire.
This is not a leadership conversation, but more of the symbol that you represent within your company. Leaders come in many different variations and in smaller companies they tend to be another worker or manager that is in the trenches with everyone else. But as your company grows, your leadership needs to grow along with it. Here are some pros and cons of leadership styles:
A Hands-On Leader: This is where you are active in the day-to-day management of your company. You meet with customers, you deliver the service or help make the product, and you run the company at the same time. This is probably a lot of us. Nothing bad here, but how do you balance the line of being seen as the owner of the company and the coworker with the team? You must be a leader and trainer to the team. Directing and guiding from experience while teaching the team to be able to think for themselves. Promoting team leadership within the ranks so that you can eventually step away from the daily activities. This inspires connection and loyalty when done well. They will follow your sword into ‘battle’ whenever you ask.
Lead From The Top: This is where you are only running the business and you have hired people in place to do the daily active tasks. The positioning here is harder to gain team loyalty because they don’t have a connection with you. When you do try, it’s always a little awkward, like shaking hands along the parade route. You try to build rapport but it’s always at a distance. You can hope that your team leaders are able to bridge the distance for you but it is often tough. The best way is to build a culture that encourages the values you’d like to be shared down the line. You lead from those values, showcasing your regular acts that represent how you want them to follow in their own actions.
The way that you are viewed as a leader can inspire your team and your customers to follow you. Don’t be just a figurehead of state. Get involved with everyone on your team and encourage them to follow you. Leading by a good example and engaging with your “subjects’ on a regular basis will deepen their desires to keep you as their Crowned King or Queen. And that is always good for business and profitability.
