I don’t identify with aging like crazy at 60
There’s a study making the rounds that claims we age in two distinct spurts—at 44 and 60. But then I saw another version of the study in a different publication, stating the ages are actually 40 and 65. So which is it?
Curious, I skimmed through the abstract myself. The study involved just over 100 participants, which is a tiny sample size compared to the world population.
It made me wonder, did they consider factors like socioeconomic status, living conditions, genetics, and so on? How diverse was the sample, really?
Anyway, when I was 40, I was having my second baby (who was born just 45 minutes after I checked into the clinic). By 44, I was busy chasing two little kids and rebuilding my life. At 48, I ran a half marathon—I didn’t feel old at all.
Now, at 60 – a week away from my 61st birthday – I’m in better physical, mental, and emotional shape than I was at 50. Sure, I’ve mentioned having more medical tests in the past few months than I’ve ever had, but this isn’t the first time that’s happened, and life goes on.
I’m Aging, of course, but I refuse to buy into the idea that “XYZ is the age at which you fall apart.” If I believe that, I might internalize it and stop doing the things that are keeping me active and limber.
Has this study popped up on your feed? If it has, go read the comments—they’re hilarious. 😀
