Cancellation of TV Shows: A Disappointment for The Creators and the Audience
Cancelling things when they have not ended hurts pretty bad, especially when it comes to TV Shows with brilliant storylines.
Some TV shows, which had the potential to end pretty well, might devastate the viewers when they end abruptly. It is more hurtful for the creators who have something creative in their minds that never can be fulfilled.
While some shows already have the central idea for their season 1 before they are pitched to studios, some creators plan the whole vision of their projects. Some of the shows that got cancelled too soon are:
1899
1899, a Netflix original, gained a lot of attention when it released its season 1 in 2022, unfortunately, it got cancelled before the second season in early 2023. The show was created by the same creators of The Dark, which successfully completed its three seasons. The creators had planned the whole story for 1899 too, but it did not even survive for a second season.
Daredevil
The Netflix Marvel show Daredevil has received more success and appreciation than its peers, Iron Fist and The Defenders. It was the most popular Marvel show on Netflix but unfortunately got cancelled after 3 seasons out of the 4 planned. The fans were shocked as season 3’s ending already had a great storyline for season 4.
I Am Not Okay With This
I Am Not Okay With This, was decided to run for a total of two seasons. The coming-of-age dark comedy was loved by its fans and had also been renewed for a season 2 as it had already won the hearts of the audience with its mystery about how the protagonist got her powers at the end. Fans were excited for season two but unfortunately, it got cancelled due to Covid-19 according to Deadline.Â
Hannibal
Hannibal, one of the popular shows of HBO was cancelled after three seasons despite its creator, Bryan Fuller’s extensive plan to continue the show for seven seasons. The show starred Mads Mikkelsen as the serial killer and cannibal. The three seasons focused on his origin as Hannibal and his relationship with Will Graham, and the later seasons were planned to dive deep into their characters according to the Thomas Harris novels.Â
Westworld
Westworld was another science fiction show that was an adaptation of the novel of the same name by the author of Jurassic Park, Michael Crichton. The earlier shows and movies depicted the story after 1973. The latest show which aired in 2016 was shut down by HBO after four seasons whereas the creators had planned five seasons for the show.Â
Dollhouse
The creators of the show Dollhouse had a five-year plan for the show, but their vision was shattered as it got cancelled after just 2 seasons, a big blow to the creators of the show. The show starred Eliza Dushku, in which people decided to be reprogrammed and earn Money as “Dolls.” The programming would allow them to have talents, skills and identities according to the client they serve.Â
Joss Whedon, the director of Avengers, said in an interview that he had a five-year plan for the show with an assured and clear vision ahead. Unfortunately, the vision of how the “Dolls” would break free from their new lives, could not be fulfilled.
Cancellation of shows is the worst for creators who work hard to build their whole plan for the future and never get the chance to conclude their original plan. Some of these shows have won the hearts of the audience and even they get disappointed when their favorite shows get cancelled abruptly, leaving them in limbo.
