Every generation faces its own set of stereotypes and misunderstandings, and my generation is no exception. Often, we are labeled as soft and reliant on Technology. In some cases, this may be true, but overall, I don’t believe this is the case for Gen Z. Just as previous generations have evolved and adapted to changing times, so have we. We’re navigating a rapidly transforming world, bringing on new perspectives and skills that are vital for the future. Coaches, to work effectively with my generation, it’s essential to understand best how to lead, teach, and inspire Gen Z students and athletes.

To gain respect from my generation, it’s crucial to be knowledgeable and well-informed. We know when leaders and coaches are faking it, and I also believe it is hard to gain our trust. Every day we are consumed with social media videos and information that no other generation has had access to before us. We aren’t so quick to believe anything coaches tell us; therefore, we need to truly see that you have a deep understanding and true knowledge. Coaches may shake their heads at this, but I believe it is a good thing because once you gain our trust, we will listen, engage, and try to make you proud.

Motivation for my generation often stems from a combination of personal Relationships and positive affirmations. I said earlier that this generation is labeled as soft but that does not mean coaches should coach that way. I truly appreciate a coach who can look me in the eye and tell me with honesty what I’m doing poorly and what I need to work on to be my best. Those hard conversations fueled by love and build personal relationships between coaches and athletes. None of this works unless there is positive affirmation as well. Coaches, when your player does something well, look them in the eyes and tell them they do a good job. Trust me, it means a lot to this generation. I have been blessed with great coaches throughout my life and I hope to apply what I have learned to future generations.
